Hi.
My Fender 57 deluxe reissue has hiss when the instrument volume control knob and tone knobs are turned up even when no instrument is plugged in.

It gets quite loud as you turn up the knobs.

This does not happen if the microphone volume control us turned up even with turning up the tone control.

If the instrument volume control and tone control is all the way down the sound is minimal. As these are turned up it gets louder. This noise only occurs if the instrument volume control is used not the microphone volume. I start with all knobs turned all the way down. Then as I turn up instrument volume and tone the noise gets louder.

I switched position of the tubes but the same thing happened.

Could it still be a tube even if it didn't change with switching tube position and the noise being just with the instrument volume and tone control.

Any suggestions?

If the consensus is to have it professionally evaluated, who in west los Angeles is very good and if possible an authorized fender service center.

Thanks

Update: I pulled each preamp tube out separately and each time there was no sound at all. No hiss and no instrument sound. I guess that was to be expected as you probably need both tubes installed to complete a circuit and get any sound.

Does this mean that it could be that one of the preamp tubes is the culprit? Or not?

Thanks.

Here is the schematic:
http://support.fender.com/schematics/gu ... ematic.pdf

You can see that V1 (2 triodes named a and b in V1) is common to Inputs "instrument" and "microphone". That explains why there is no sound when you remove V1.

Then if you don't have any hiss using mic, you can use it because it is exactly the same circuit as instrument.
May try a spare 12ax7 on V1.

Since they are common to both inputs would that rule out the preamp tubes as the problem since the hissing is only on one input.

When I look at the schematic it looks like v1 and v2 each represent a preamp tube. Is that correct. I dont see a and b.

Are the inputs J 1-4.

Thanks.

I'm not sure that the valve V1 is the root cause but there is a high probability. The valve V1 (12ax7) has 2 independante noval triodes quoted V1-A and V1-B on the schematic. These triodes are used as a preamp for Inst and Mic.
V2 is also a 12ax7 (2 triodes), V2-A is used to mix channels and amplify the signal to be applied on V2-B. V2-B is a kind of phase inverter that makes the signal in phase opposite to drive the push-pull (power stage) V3 and V4 (6V6GT).
8)
J1-4 are jack inputs.

I recommand you to test a spare 12ax7 or ECC83 (what ever the brand is) in V1.

As well as what Tis-san is suggesting I would highly recommend you exchange V1 for a 12AY7, it is the tube Leo Fender's original design calls for in that position. The tone of the amp will sound sweeter and you will also get some additional headroom, it may even help with the hiss with the 12AY7 having about 40% of the gain as the 12AX7.

I was looking at the wrong page of the schematic. I see what you are referring to on the very first page.

I don't have any extra tubes handy so I'll be getting some.

But, is there a way, looking at the schematic that the hissing could only occur with the instrument inputs and not the microphone inputs if one preamp (12ax7) tube was bad and switching the position of the preamp tubes didn't change anything? Or is it more likely another component that is unique to the instrument inputs?

Thank you.

One other thought:
It's not the inputs that are the problem as the noise occurs even with nothing plugged in. It's just when you turn up the instrument volume that the noise occurs and gets louder as you turn up the volume and the tone knob. With the microphone volume this does not happen. Does this lead you to believe that it could still be a tube. Could a loose wire/connector do this?

First try a new tested 12ax7 or ECC83 (even with lower gain ECC82 or ECC81) on V1. You can go to your dealer, most of them have this king of valve. 8)

For the question, it could be a passive component drift but at the current time I don't believe it

I ordered some new preamp tubes... so we will see what happens with those.

Could it be one of the other 3 tubes or not?

Also, i didn't mention that this was purchased from someone else and shipped across country. He said that this was not an issue for him. The only things that changed were that he removed the tubes for shipping and i put them in. So hopefully just a tube got damaged in transit. Could there be a loose wire or something else that got damaged from shipping?

I received the new preamp tubes and installed them. They were noisier than the originals and made an even worse ticking type sound. I then reinstalled the original tubes and the noise went back to how it was. Then i tried the new tubes again and this time they sounded the same as the orginals.

I thought that maybe it has something to do with the sockets so i put them in this time in a way that they were tighter by having the tube shield higher up. This stopped the noise but the amp's overall output was much less. It was quieter then suddenly it got louder and the noise was back. I looked and the shields moved into their normal position.

Maybe this is just dirty sockets or loose sockets. I will be bringing it to an amp tech soon to evaluate.......

It could be a dirty socket, wire broken, a solder joint, a component drift, bad ground on Inst volume pot ... (there are only 11 components to check carefully + their connections and wires that are not common to Mic input)

But as far as you don't have a background in electrical engineering, I do not recommand to open yourself your amp because there are lethal voltages and I agree on your position to visit a amp tech. If the amp is less than 5 years it should be still under 7ender warranty ?

I'm looking forward to see what the amp tech says.
