Being the curious type of person I am, I was looking around the internet for DRRI Mods. I found (then lost) a page that said you could jump channels on the DRRI the way you can on say a Marshall JTM-45. Which in the case of the DRRI you would run your guitar into Normal Channel 1, then run a jumper from Normal Channel 2 into Vibrato Channel 1.

Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Yes, it's quite common and works with any amp that has 2 separate channel inputs. You can also connect two separate amps together this same way. Run your guitar into input 1 of Normal Channel, then run a jumper from input 2 of Normal Channel into a second amp.

Thanks. I have done it on Marshall's. I was not sure about the DRRI though.

The channels of the DRRI (and any vintage-type two-channel Fender reverb combo) are wired out-of-phase with one another. Conventional channel-jumpering will result in attenuated highs and lows, with most of the classic blackface tone strangled from the amp and a reduction in maximum available volume.

If you alter the amp by performing the "Fritz" mod, the channels will be correctly phased (as well as making the reverb and trem available on both the normal and vibrato channels). You can also use an A/B/Y channel selector that has a built-in phase-shift function such as the Radial Tonebone to accomplish this.

I've done the "Fritz Mod" as well. Works great.

Hey Arjay.....The Fritz mod requires clipping and jumpering the DRRI internally...correct?
I'm a bit reluctant to slice and dice my new DRRI FSR right yet .... does jumping channels using the Tonebone accomplish the same exact task? Same tone???

Understandable given a new amp (with a factory warranty), Mikie.

Yes, the Tone Bone will allow access to both channels -- and permit phasing them correctly if you wish to use both simultaneously.

I like to run two independent signal chains (with different stompboxes for each) and have instant footswitchable access to either or both as the song demands. I leave a lot of people scratching their heads as they wonder how a vintage or re-issue blackface can sound like EC's "Let It Rain" one moment then I'm busting out with some GNR chops the next. And I haven't touched a single knob on the amp.

Yep the channels are out of phase, and it does sound pretty bad that way. +1 on the Tone Bone. Why void a warranty?

+1

The cost for that "insurance" is borne by the customer -- violating it makes as much sense as discarding your reverb/trem footswitch because you dislike the tremolo effect, only to discover that one of the tunes that the band you just joined plays is Tito & Tarantula's "After Dark".

In my case, my DRRI is a first-year-of-issue '93 model that I purchased some ten years after the fact. Not that the amp has ever needed any repairs while in my possession, mind you......just a few "minor" mods.
