A quick vid to compare the two amps... my amp is not your average DRRI, but wanted to give some of you an idea of what can be done with this amp. It's like having a SR in a smaller package 8)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL8BjOfmLjU

Guitar volume around 8
DR volume at 7
SR volume at 5

First lick is DR (brighter of course...) followed by SR. At 2:15 I run both amps together. Sorry for the poor quality, just used my digital camera.

I don't know whitch one is whitch from the video but they sound like different animals. Instinctivley I don't like the SR. I had a CBS Twin that I hated. I am guessing that the sterile tone is coming from the SR and all the reverb in the world won't help it. This is just my opinion and I don't mean to tic anyone off (as I reach for my shotgun).

Evidently you didn't listen to what I just did, there's no sterile tone in either amp,one is brighter, the SR I believe, but they both sound good..... :D
well, cedarblues,I just reread your first post explaining which one was the brighter, you said DRRI,to tell the truth I lost track as to which one was being played, and thought it was the SR that sounded brighter, they're close though.
I have quite a few vintage Fender amps and they all sound different, even the 3 DR's.
Sounds good man!

We all hear tone differently... for me the SR is probably the best sounding Fender amp, if it wasn't for the size and weight I'd play it everywhere. I don't see how you can call that tone sterile, but again, everyone's ears are different :) I'm just happy that I can get my DRRI to sound very close to that SR tone.

The first lick I play is on the DRRI, followed by the same lick on the SR, it's easy to tell which is which...

If that is the case the DRRI sounds sterile to me. Mabey it is the excessive use of reverb.

Neither amp sounds sterile IMO, you have to hear both amps in person to enjoy this heavenly tone, remember, this was recorded using a digital camera. The DRRI has a 15" Eminence Big Ben, whoever hears this amp when I'm out playing falls in love with the tone, so it aint just me

Let me see if I can find some better clips of the amp.

That is interesting - I actually like the SR more to my taste

Really nice playing Cedar, and great amps!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The SR (not reissue) is one mean sounding amp. I only had the volume at 5 to try to match it the DRRI's volume, it really starts to sing once you get passed 6, but it can get very loud! But that tone is something else.

Neither amp sounds sterile to me. A bit more reverb than what I like, but that's okay. Reverb is all a matter of taste. Recording technique and the room itself has a big bearing on the tone. If you listen to the sample on cheap computer speakers, and I'm not saying anyone did, it would seriously sound sterile.

My SF CBS Twin didn't sound sterile either. If it did I would have dumped it. I didn't have it for 30 years creating bad sound. IMO, My stock HRDlx was sterile as are most HRD amps. Just me though, YMMV.
cedarblues, you have two fine amps, and thanks for the demo.

I agree, it does sound like there's too much reverb, both amps are set at 3. I think it's the way the camera picks up the audio, cause it doesn't sound anything like that! I like a bit of reverb, that's too much for me.

Both of these rigs sound great to me! And I have every confidence that if/when I ever visit cedarblues, we'll take these amps to open-mic jam night at The Iguana and I'll be thrilled at the tone regardless of which one he lets me play. Seldom have I found a Fender AB763 amp that didn't deliver the sound I prefer -- I'm much more picky about my guitars.

cedar....reverb is one thing I get frustrated over in my amps,as I'm constantly dropping it lower,it's either too much or not enough, but I rarely get them over 3,also.
The amps I have without verb are the brownface Princeton and Super and the tweed Deluxe, out of those the Super has the most resonate cabinet and sounds like you have a reverb knob set on about 2....it's cool.

+1 Arjay. How can you call amps that were recorded with a camcorder sterile?
I've never heard a bad sounding Fender AB763 either. Bad players, that's another thing
I agree about reverb. I usually never use it unless a room has a lot sound absorbing materials like drapes, carpet and the like. I like natural room and cabinet reverb if it works out.
