i've had one of these for about 12 years now and really dont know much about it except the red knobs mean something special.

it says "eighty five" on the front and has a single 12". sounds really good with vintage guitars.

can anyone tell me more about it? i tried google and didnt really find much.

There was an earlier post on these amps...here was my reply and info I had on them.

Here is a review on it:
Features: The Fender eighty-five Deluxe is a 85 Watt solid state amp with a 12" speaker. This amp is versatile for a lot of styles like blues and rock, but there isn't enough distortion for a real heavy metal sound, so if you are into metal, you'de better buy a stompbox. The amp has two channels (you can Switch between them with a footswitch that comes with it). One clean channel, and one channel with all the settings like reverb, distortion, etc. You can also use these functions on the clean channel, using the footswitch. The footswitch has 3 switches, one for channel switching, one for the boost (yes it has a boost, which I really like, and one for the reverb. There are quite a lot of jackets: input channel 1, input channel 2, preamp in, preamp out, headphone, footswitch.

And here is a link for the Schematic.

Ok...I did some more research from my Fender Frontlines, catalogs, and price lists. They came out in 1988 and ran thru 1993. This amp was part of the "Fast Four" solid state amps and were part of the red knob series, they had a solid state line like yours and a tube series all with the red knobs, gray grill cloth, etc. This was a pretty comprehensive line of amps, everything from a Champ 12 (Tube) up to "The Twin". The solid state line consisted of the Fender 15 with an 8 Inch Speaker, the 85, the Deluxe 85, Stage 185 (2x12 spkrs) and the London 185 Head. The numbers represented the power of each amp. Your amps product number was 22-5200. Specs are as follows. 85 Watts CIP (65 RMS) 2 channels, Gain Boost, Mid Boost, Limiter, came with a 3 button footswitch, effects loop, head phone jack and 1x12inch Eminence speaker. It listed for $449.99, $20 for the cover.

These amps were part of the new Fender Company's first amp line. They were actually the first successful implimentation of solid state amps in Fender's history. They were the first amps that "Sounded good, were priced well and were successful" this is a quote from Mike Lewis who was one of the marketing guys at Fender and is from John Morrishs book called "The Fender Amp Book". They were designed by Mark Wentling and Bill Hughes and were built in Lake Oswego Oregon.

Well that was about all I could find on your amp, I highly suggest you try to track down the book by John Morrish listed earlier, it has a pretty extensice section on the red knob series of amps. These amps were later revamped into the Standard Series and had black knobs (like the red knobs only black and white) and silver grill cloth.

FWIW

Rumblebox, glad to help, that is what this forum is all about.

...but I noticed I gave you the Deluxe 85, not the 85 (Eighty-Five) specs, so here is the update...the amps product number was 22-5000, It does not have channel switching, but does have assignable gain, the list price was $399, and two button footswitch.

Sorry for the mistake, dang the small print in the catalogue!!!

All else was accurate as stated.

also the treble pot is messed up. quite frequently i have to give it a thump to make it stop. its bad enough to require fixing. do they just bolt in like the pots on a guitar?

Yes they are held in similiarly. But just a word of caution you can electrocute yourself very easy if you don't know what your doing with amplifiers on the insides. I recommend taking it to a good tech as if it is just loose or if the pot needs to be replaced it should not cost much if that is an issue.

I worked in a guitar store in 1990 around the time these were available and they were pretty good sounding amps...if you could get past the looks of them...a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to my Fender amps!

Enjoy the amp!
