I have a Blackstar HT5 and it is OK but I like the Champ 600 better for home use. I'm just not a big modeler fan.

Since my last post I dusted off the Blackstar and plkugged it in. It dosen't have the Fender cleans at all but it does sound a lot like a Marshall. I feel like I have been cheating on my Fenders

Why? It's not cheating. It's exploring other tonal possibilities that Fender can't do. There's only one Fender clean IMO and it's in the Blackface and some of the Silverface amps. And when they cease to exist that's it. Tweeds are a world of their own.

The only cheating is the fact that you cheat yourself if you only stick to one brand and never expand into the realm of other tonal possibilities.

Don't sweat it, just enjoy it. I wish would come out with a 65 Champ and Princeton head. I know the amps are already small, but they'd be even smaller and if they put 4/8 and 16 ohm output jacks on them, you could plug into almost any cabinet you want. I tried my 74 Champ through a Weber Impedance Matcher and a Marshall 4x12 and it was nuts. Huge fun.

this day in age, i just dont see how anybody would limit themselves to one brand of guitar or one brand of amp. i dont understand the thinking behind it.

Brand loyalty I guess. I drove Chrysler products for years. All little shitboxes because I don't like big cars and like decent gas mileage. I bought a 2 year old Ford Focus with a stick and 10,000 miles on it for ten grand and I can get a little over 38 mpg with it. It's a way better car than any of my other Chrysler's were. I was brand loyal for 30 years. Why? I guess I was just comfortable with something familiar I guess.

I think that Fender has a sound of it's own. Even in their solid state amps. After using Fender amps for years, I find other amps lack that certian clearity. To my ears (for instance) Fenders have a glassy authoritive sound to them, and a Marshall has a brassy, ballsy sort of nasal sound. All other manufacturers fall somewhere in between. In my opinion.

By the way I own 2 Fenders, 2 Marshalls, and a blackstar. I use all of them during the week for different applications. I favor the Pro Junior though.

I also own 2 Takamines ( 0ne 12 string and one 6 string ), a Strat, 2 Teles, and an Epi Les Paul. I favor the Tele's. Especially the red one.

I always considered my HRDlx the "New" Fender sound or the "Anti" Fender sound. I bought it because it was different and because it was a Fender. A brand I was loyal to since 1964 or so. I had many other amps by many different manufacturers, but always came back to Fender. The honeymoon phase wore off pretty quickly on the HRDlx in the tone department, then the problems started. Now it's Egnater's turn. After roughly a year and a half, I still find new combinations of tones that are still very familiar but different at the same time. Until Fender can get it's act together building quality amps instead of coming out with a new hiss fest, fizz more fizz amp every other month, I'll be sticking with either Egnater or just build a 5e3 and be done with it. Just my opinion, not trying to offend anyone. We all love what we love.

If you are referring to the 5E3 kit from The Tube Depot it looks intriguing. So does the 18 watt British. If you go for it would you let us know how it turns out?
