Can anyone recommend an amp that sounds like a deluxe reverb that is reliable. I've been thinking about buying a DRRI but every time I have gone to Guitar Center there has been something wrong with them. Last night I went to another Guitar Center to try one and as soon as I turned it on it had a loud hum. The hum only went away when I turned the reverb down below 2. As great as this amp sounds I am now very reluctant to purchase it for fear it might have reliability issues. I have been playing my Peavey Bandit 65 for 26 years without one problem. I can't imagine paying $1000 for a DRRI and then having problems. I want the sound of the DRRI with out the problems. Any suggestions

Buy a used one at least ten years old.

They're posted all the time on every C/L across the country, usually for $700 or less. And those decade-old amps seem to have far fewer issues than the new-production gear.

Best of luck, HTH

I've had mine 6 months now...no issues. Knock on simulated-cherry-hardwood.... But it doesn't get moved around much either! A demo in a guitar store would be prone to all sorts of mistreatment. Which could be taken both good and bad. The DRRI in my GC gets used a lot by folks, including myself. It sits on a shelf just at the right height when sitting down with a guitar for demo purposes. So it must get lots of use along with the BDRI right next to it and a Frontman 15G.

You need to change the title of your post to Deluxe Reverb Reissues_______
I have three DRs right now,'65,'66,and '67,they're rock solid, play 'em till the cows come home, tone monsters. :D
Must be issues with the new ones like Arjay said...sad,really...it tarnishes the name,Deluxe Reverb.

Most new production amps come stock with crappy tubes that fail immediately. And, maybe an amp was damaged in shipping, but never checked before it was put out on the floor. Don't forget to take into account the fact that people trying out these amps sometimes damage them, or steal tubes, fuses, etc. from them. And, it's not just the customers! The other week at a Guitar Center I wanted to try out an Egnater Tweaker head that was sitting on an Egnater cab. The salesguy gave me a guitar cable and turned on the amp. While he was doing this, he was standing BEHIND the amp, and then walked away. I started playing, but there was no sound. After spending a few minutes trying to figure out if the problem was with the guitar, cable, or amp, I looked at the back of the amp and saw that there was NO speaker cable running from the head to the cab. The salesguy, who was behind the amp, never even noticed this! I also tried a DRRI, but it didn't turn on even though it was plugged into the power outlet. I looked in the back and saw that the fuse was missing. In this case it wasn't stolen, but was on the shelf behind the amp. It either fell out on its own, or someone helped it. People also steal knobs off of guitars and amps.

I see knobs missing off guitars all the time. Even on the higher end models which I have noticed my local GC now moving further up the wall so that if you want to play them, you have to ask so someone can get it down for you.

I don't blame them for that.

Yeah, like the folks that stuff their pockets with the free picks GC puts out on the counter... I asked one twenty-something if he was going to use all those picks? Told me to f-off and walked out the door! I just laughed...the store manager told me it happens all the time.

Heavy sigh...

The amps and guitars at my local Guitar Center are all hammered. Not a lot
of maintenance time invested.

What makes GC so attractive is........30 day no-questions-asked refund policy.

Get that DRRI.......new in the box, take it home, put it through it's paces...
then decide if works for you or not......

Funny... the hot rod series amps are even worse... I have two Deluxe Reverbs... both are less than 10 years old... one is having minor issues after a year... the other is rock solid... Amp repair is ridiculously expensive.. So I will only have them repaired unless it's something major..

As far a buying an old one... thats great, but wouldnt old ones be at risk of having issues.. just because they are old... I remember walking into Music Brokers on Cental Ave here in Phoenix and they had 4 vintage fenders either DR's or Twins... and all of them were having issues.. none of them worked... And this is after (what they tell me) was "their tech working on them"...

I believe all of you that they are more reliable... But its still a crap shoot after buying one... At least with a new one you know it's history...

Do not buy one "sound unheard". Make the sales staff open it up right there on the spot and play it to ascertain that there are no issues. If you hear anything unbecoming, anything wonky at all, refuse it and ask for another.

While searching for deluxe reverb clones I found a company called Tube Tone that makes a deluxe reverb clone that is point to point wired. It includes JJ tubes, a Weber speaker and a bright switch. For a little extra you can have a mid tone control added. You can even add an effects loop. It sounds like this might be a better alternative than a $2000 45 year old vintage model with old aging parts. Has anyone heard about Tube Tone.
