Ok, here is the deal...I have lately gotten into this groove where I am getting amazing tone from my little 15 watt amps...BJ, Pro JR, and SCXD. When I go to my DRRI I am just not as happy with my sound...is this normal??

It's prolly the fact that your DRRI needs to be cranked to a minimum specific volume level before the amp begins to sing. The tubes and the output tranny need a certain amount of heat before they can hit their sweet spot.

Kinda like when you go to battle-zero a newly-issued service rifle -- your first round will often score as "maggie's drawers". That's because the chamber and barrel are stone-cold. But subsequent shots can easily be walked into the 10x ring.

Could be... :? I must say though that the BJ and Pro Jr have really been speaking to me lately. I also have been playing some smaller venues 100-150 seaters so the DRRI just doesn't seem appropriate if you know what I mean.

Hell......now I feel guilty about dragging a Twin Reverb into a three-stool saloon.

How about this...when I finally make my way to your neck of the woods on TDY I will bring my favorite Tele and you and I can find a place to play and you can school me on the proper way to work my DRRI?? :) I love it but in the venues around here it is too big!!! That said I have been getting some really satisfying tones form my smaller amps. I do miss the DRRI when it is running wide open!

Well enjoy the smaller amps where appropriate and save the DRRI for when you have an outdoor jam at the next battalion barbecue.

I could be all-wet here but....maybe a OD or Distortion pedal in front of the DRRI would help?

I'm not sure what ABS's pedal array consists of. I use a Zoom amp simulator and a Fulltone OCD with mine, which affords consistent tones at pretty much any volume level. Accessing both channels with an A/B/Y footswitch provides a variety of voicings to suit my "druthers".

if those amps are doing you justice then stay the heck away from the egnator tweaker or rebel20. i own the 20 and its a goldmine of a small amp. the tone is amazing. i also own the BJ. two very different amps.
for at home, try a OCD through a pignose. you will never turn you pro or BJ on again at home.

Arjay,
I hear you. For pedals I prefer to use a Boss SD1 overdrive and a Boss Chorus ensemble! I prefer to have the DRRI get dirty on its own :)

a lot of folks like that chours ensemble. what the deal with it? does the chours effect sound different than most? ive never played with that pedal, but have seen it on stages a lot. a richer effect tone maybe? i just have a plain jane chours pedal from boss. its old as the hills. i dont use it any more.

I was always under the impression the DRRI was in about the same volume range as the blues Jr and the like. Isn't it only 22 watts with 112?

the RDDI is but i think the deluxe VM is 40 watts. TGS has one, maybe she will chime in with that.

The Deluxe VM is in desperate need of a critical mod......

Image

They have a nasty habit of shedding their grills at the most inopportune of moments.

A few #8 machine-screws and some 3/4" fender washers are all that's required to affect a fix.
