Try putting a 5751 in V1.

Excellent. New or NOS?

That's usually the first thing I do with my tube amps.

New Sovtek.

So I actually ended up trying it with JJ ecc83's in all three slots since I had quite a few on hand, and so far I like it. It seems like the amp is a bit ballsier and can get louder. I like the overdriven lead sounds a bit more but I'm not sure about cleaner sounds yet. I've only had one rehearsal and about 30 mins of playing by myself with the JJ's but so far I'm going to keep them in.

I can't seem to find much talk of using JJ ecc83's in the Blues Jr. III (or at least I haven't looked hard enough). I know people love putting the JJ el84's in, of course, but staying on the topic of preamp tubes what are peoples' thoughts on JJ ecc83's in the preamp?

played a gig last night and my amp cut out twice for 2~4 seconds during hotter solo's. There's a possibility it was some form of a loose link in my pedal board but I'm thinking it might have something to do with the JJ ecc83's I put in it.
I'm a little unsure how I feel about their breakup so I'm thinking about putting the GT 12ax7-R's back in.

For some reason I can't find much talk on using JJ ecc83's in the blues jr. Just JJ EL84's. I read somewhere that ecc83's are designed for high gain amplifiers, does this sound right?

I´ve swaped the tubes on my ProJrIII for Telam EL84´s and JAN Sylvania 12AX7WA´s. Couldn´t be happier with the tone now. Weber Signature Alnico 10S on the way as well! I still have to try the NOS RCA 7025/12AX7. Got one on the way.
Ive tried a JAN GE 5751 on my V1, yes it was less darker, but I it takes too much volume to overdrive it.

The NOS Jan Phillips 5751 is really, really quiet and not really expensive at all. Great sounding tube.

Since starting this thread I've tried quite a few different tubes in V1 and somehow this 12ax7wc that i bought way overpriced on musicians friend is sounding better than any sovtek I've dabbled with (which I think is just a bunch of 12ax7wa's).

I did end up keeping one of the JJ ecc83's in V2 because the 12ax7wa that was in it crapped out upon me putting it back in (maybe I didn't store it correctly?) and that didn't do anything bad to the tone. I think I might like it more than the 12ax7wa that was in it if my memory serves me right.

I ordered a Jan Phillips 5751 from thetubestore.com along with one of the Mullard 12ax7 (are these good? I know they're not NOS though). I also got a Tungsol and a Svetlana to try too (what are peoples thoughts on these?)

+1 for just about any JAN tube.

JAN stands for Joint Army Navy and are military spec or mil spec for short. It should be new old stock. I used one in V1 in my Egnater Rebel 20 to knock the gain down a little. The Rebel had more gain than I ever wanted or needed and the 5751 brought it down just enough and made it perfect for what I do. You're doing the best thing you could do by experimenting and using your own ears as the judge and jury. I can't stand GT's. I find them brittle sounding with no dimension or tonal complexity that I like. I never got any mileage out of them and found them over priced too. Some folks love them. That's what's great about the whole process. Your amps tone will be tailored to your own taste. You can always toss the ones you don't like on EBay.

I think I'll order a JAN 5751 and try that out although I do hear a marked difference between the JJ 12ax7 and the new Sovtek 5751. Time for some more explorin'...

Ricky!!!!! - a JAN 5751 is on the way. I will update you all on my findings....I continue to be impressed with the Sovtek 5751. It seems to also improve the tone of the reverb (at lower volumes). I like what I am hearing so far...(I have a Blues Jr. Tweed with Billm mods). I am surprised at the differences just by the changing of the tubes..... :D

I know I couldn't believe it either. Mine went from being a super bright never-use-bridge-pickup amplifier to almost too dark and not bright enough just from changing a sovtek 12ax7wa with a sovtek 12ax7wc. I couldn't believe it. Since then I feel like I've been overly conscious about the tubes in my amp.

With you on waiting for my JAN 5751 to come in the mail!
