Hi all, newbie to the forum. I have searched the forum for this but to no avail so please tell me if I am duplicating another post.

I was considering buying a multi effects unit and using the 4-cable method with my Fender Blues Devill reissue. I am about to invest in either a Boss GT or Line 6 HD. I want to use it mainly for effects other than distortion / overdrive but I also to store some patches for the more zany distortion sounds that my stomp boxes can't create.

However, I have read online that this will not be successful as the Deville has a parallel FX loop.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Or does anyone use the GT or HD into the front end of a deville and with what resultant effect on tone?

Thanks Guys!

Hi Thirtyplus,

The BDvl doesn't have a "parallel" effects loop, the "Preamp Out" is independent, but when you plug into the "Power Amp In", internal switching in the amp disconnects the preamp section from the signal path, so you would have to have the "Preamp Out" signal routed back to the "Power Amp In" through your pedal in order to use the preamp section of the amp. If you break the loop, no sound out, even with a guitar plugged into the input.

Thanks shimmilou,

So it is possible to use the amps pre-amp. :)

From what I understand, the M13 and HD500 from line 6 also has an effects loop so using a 4 cable method is is meant to be possible to cancel the amp modelling, use the overdrives and distortions in front of the amp and put the other effects into the FX loop. Is this correct? One multi effects unit does it all while maintaing the integrity of the amps pre-amp sound?

If I understand the connections, the pedal will either drive the "Power Amp In" of the amp directly, bypassing the amp's preamp section, or the pedal will connect the "Preamp Out" of the amp directly to the "Power Amp In" allowing use of the preamp section of the amp. One thing is unclear, can you use the pedal and the amp's preamp together, or are you switching the pedal in and out when switching the amp's preamp in and out......or can you do both independently?

If this is how it is supposed to work, then it should work well with the BDvl. I have used a POD XT as a preamp directly into the Power Amp In with great results, the POD modeling is pretty good. I'll bet that the HDs are even better. Post some feedback after you try it out, see if the amp's loop hurts the tone when connected this way. :)

Thanks again for that. I'm glad someone is optimistic about it :)

I have yet to buy the pedal and would like to be sure it works before I buy it (rural location and not in stock in our local guitar store so a test drive is impossible). I would love to hear from someone who has tried it.
