It's a very nice amp, and versatile. At rehearsals I have to play with the clean channel well below '2.' The Vibrolux setting is thin (I use an EJ Strat and GE Smith Tele). I've heard the channel fattens up nicely at higher (window-blowing) volumes, meaning an attenuator, maybe, or an FDM speaker. Wondering if a lower-gain preamp (12AT, or even 12 AY?) tube would help, and, if so, which tube socket to sub out. Thanks.

Hi stratotim,

Looks like V2 is the only tube that will affect the clean channel sound without also affecting the burn channel. V1 is split, with half used for each channel. V3 will affect the burn channel only. V4 and V5 use half of each for the effects loop, V6 is pi, V9 and V10 are reverb driver and recovery. So any of the tubes V1, V2, V4, V5 will all affect the clean channel sound, with V1 and V2 probably having the most impact, and V2 being the only one that will affect only the clean channel. I would try a lower gain tube in V2, and then also try the same for V1 if it doesn't hurt the sound of the drive channel. I personally wouldn't go lower than a 12AT7. The GT 12AX7-C will fatten up your clean tone somewhat (they are not a lower gain tube), I use them for better/smoother/warmer drive channel sound in my HRDlx and they also warmed the clean channel a bit. Actually, you might want to try the 12AX7-C in V1, V2 and V3.

The TUng SOl 12AX7 can fatten it up a little bit. Also, with a Strat tried the Vibrolux with treble on 1 and Bass on 6 or 7. Most of us don't dare to move the Treble that low, but that is how guys with classic amps were achieving such great clean tone.
