I hope I don't come acrossed as a complete idiot here. My amp has started sounding like crap lately, what seems to be uncontrolable distortion and a rumbling flabby sound that drives me nuts. This is on the clean channel, I never use the drive channel. I haven't changed the tubes in a couple years, I mostly am a bedroom player, so I looked at the tubes last night to see if any was not lit up. Here's my question, I noticed that when I turned on my standby switch nothing happened. None of the tubes lit up. Aren't they suppossed to light up in standby to warm up? I've never looked for this before so I'm not sure what I'm suppossed to be seeing. If they are suppossed to be on in standby, but aren't, what does this tell me?

Hi Terd Ferguson,

With the power switch in the off position, the standby switch will do nothing. Starting with both switches in the off position, switch the power to on and you should see the tubes start to light up, let the tubes warm up. Then switch the standby to the on position to get sound output. After playing, switch the standby to the off position for breaks and before switching the power to the off position, to allow the tubes to cool before switching the power to the off position.

You may very well have one or more bad preamp tubes, or possibly output tubes, but I'm guessing preamp. Try changing the V1, V2, and V3 one at a time with a known good tube to find the faulty one, no bias adjust needed when changing preamp tubes. You might want to check the bias setting on the amp also (these amps are known to be biased cold from the factory), and if you do change output tubes change them both with a matched pair and set the bias properly.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
