Thanks for the heads up on the SS22. I was thinking about getting one, not now. Looks like a Deluxe Reverb and my Tube Screamer would be a better idea.

I agree with you on those Guitar mag reviews, I have found them to be way off on pedals as well. They really bragged up that Clapton Crossroads pedal and I thought it sounded like garbage.

My initial idea was to get an amp with 2 channels, because I always wanted Fender Cleans and a nice OD channel. And I tried a few combos on the market right now. (Except the boutique stuff, because it is hard to find dealers in Europe that have them in stock.)

Now with the BFDR and 2-3 pedals my need for a second channel is gone. The pedals sound so good through the Deluxe, all the sounds I need are there.

So, I'd say a Deluxe with a few nice pedals should cover a lot of ground. Not of course if you ar into heavier types of music. But then probably the 12' combo-approach + pedal is not the best philospophy anyway.
But for Jazz, Blues, Classic Rock, Indie etc...the combination is perfect.

The only thing that really interested me, was the combination of a classic BF sound and a Tweed Deluxe sound in one 12' combo. There is a builder in Germany that does just that, I think the curcuits are completely seperate. But the price is insane. (Well, you basically do get 2 amps in one...)

But in the end I decided against boutique and for vintage...

Adding one of these to your pedal board will give your DR true channel-switching capability......

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod ... sku=153931

Use it to create two separate-and-distinct signal paths and drive either amp channel (or both).

I've had one for quite some time now -- best eighty bucks I ever spent on a stompbox!

Presently I have three DRs,'65,'66'67...and of the three the '66 is the one.
It has all the right ingredients and mojo.....and sounds great....the other two are no slouches either. :D
Congrats on finding a great amp!

or my personal favorite,

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod ... sku=150753

one signal to 3 different chains/amps, or reverse it and get 3 guitars going to 1 amp.
love this pedal.

Congrats on the '66 BF.

I still have my SS22. I agree it would be tough to use in the studio. The little Egnater Tweaker I have is alot quieter than the SS22, and higher gain.(Cathode biased 6V6's) It's amazing that Fender seems to think they are dealing with a bunch of idiots out here in the amp buying world and try to spoon feed us the BS about the reason the amp is noisy is because it's high gain. I've owned a few amps in my half century. Come on Fender! It's noisy on the clean channel! And the power amp is just like a nice and quiet Deluxe! I agree high gain is typically noisy WHEN USED! Instead of trying the BS route, why don't you give the people who dropped a grand on the amp a FIX!?!?

I suspect that the only true "fix" is a substantial re-design of the entire platform. R&D guys really need to spend some time "in the field" to understand the issues.

I still do not understand how it is possible, that a amp design like this goes into production.

If they knew the amp was high-gain and thus noisy, why didn't they at least give it a Master volume, so you can turn down the hiss, especially at lower levels?

What I don't understand is why the Rivera and Zinky architecture that enabled cascaded high-gain stages with a much better S/N ratio than the current crop of saturated OD amps is totally ignored and disavowed. Amps like the 75, Prosonic, and Tonemaster have far less hiss when cranked.

A friend of mine let's me borrow his Prosonic once in awhile. I love that amp!!! Why would they ever stop making that?

You would think they would get off the high horse and learn a little from Fender's past in a good way instead of repeating the CBS era. The engineers like Zinky and Rivera were real tube amp guys. Later on, when profit was job #1, they hire the someone who designed the Blues series of amps in the '90's. He went on to design network cards for Conexant. He's in the networking business now. Yeah baby! My Blues deluxe was designed by a networking computer nerd! They know what guitarist like! Hooray! Dang, I'm starting to sound like Supro.

Do you think it could be the Egnater amp syndrome?
