Well, I was first looking at the g dec 3 30, then the Frontman 212r but it has no headphone jack, then i was leaning towards the mustang III. I have a 200 watt keyboard amps that is loud, but not really a guitar amp. I also have a digitech rp 100 modeling prossesor.I am able to hook the line out of my laptop to the rp100 and get the backing tracks on the amp to play along. I think I will just get the Frontman 212r. I can use the other amp when i need to use the headphones. Do any of you here have this amp and what is your opinion of it. Dollars are limited, so the frontman seems to be ideal for me. Any input would be appreciated.

hello... we seem to be having the same internal struggle. I have kinda settled on the Frontman 212r. I really wanted a tube amp (not sure why... just had it in my brain) but from what i gather unless i am bringing $1500 or more to the table i can forget having a decent tube amp. More recently i have been playing a lot more and really hope to get into a band or at least jam with people more so i wanted to get a real solid all purpose amp. I am not sure if the Hotrod series would be someplace to look and compare with the Frontman? Funny thing is every time i start digging i find more questions than i do answers. My thinking lately is Hotrod deluxe or frontman neither would be considered a mistake but i still am really not sure. I play pretty aggressive music and really love surf which is why i originally thought tube was the way.

Where is this coming from?

Unless you insist on buying a brand-new amp and paying the full MSRP for it there are literally a piss pot full of options for an all-tube platform. I've seen boatloads of Fender blackface re-issues and even vintage models available for way less than $1500. And these aren't "disposable amps" that you'll either out-grow, become frustrated with because they spent more time on some tech's bench for warranty service than they did being played, or that you'll lose your shirt on when it comes time to sell it or trade it in.

Gnome saing, mon?

a while ago (maybe a year or so) ago i was looking for a tube amp and posted on the fender lounge asking opinions about a few i was considering and more than one person pretty much said that they were junk unless i got into that range. so i gave up on tubes and figured ss was where my money would be better spent.

Well there are some pretty decent solid-state amps around if you know what to look for so I wouldn't rule them out. The old Fender Dyna-Touch models sounded pretty good (I have one) and Peavy's Trans-Tube models shouldn't be ignored either.

i guess you are right... i think in the long run i would get more money out of a Solid state. when i was a kid i played a tube amp but sold it because i didn't realize the value of it. hindsight is always 20/20. long story short i think putting money into a frontman will give me more bang for the buck than other amps. i thought about a mustang but with pedals and not caring about the headphone thing the 212r seems to be the powerhouse i am looking for

The Super Champ XD may be a nice option for you. Very convenient size and weight, seems like a cool recording tool, aswell.

Same price as the Frontman, but it is a 110. Just a thought 8)

If I were you I think I would either look at a nice used tube amp or a better solid state amp than the Frontman 212R. A good friend of mine bought one for his son and it really isn't a great sounding amp. You can be fooled because it has nice blackface looks with plenty of power, but his had poor tone and very poor reverb. If you are looking at $300 amps I would think a Mustang III would be a better option or something from Peavey who makes good solid state amps. As far as $1500 for a good amp goes, that's crazy. I have several tube amps and a couple of solid state amps, none of which cost $1500.

Did you misunderstand this portion of my post......?

"And these aren't "disposable amps" that you'll either out-grow, become frustrated with because they spent more time on some tech's bench for warranty service than they did being played, or that you'll lose your shirt on when it comes time to sell it or trade it in"

Good luck!
