Start with a sturdy and reliable amp platform and go from there.

For sure. Why allow someone else dictate to you what your overdrive should sound like ? Get the amp with the clean tone you are looking for and you get to decide how the OD will sound.

Or buy an Egnater and dial in every aspect of your tone either clean or dirty. You can even play with how much headroom you get with the watts dial.

+1

For years I refused to own any pedals, just wanted to plug and play... but now I only buy "clean" amps with no drive channels... one pedal is not that bad

That Blues Deluxe I had in the 90's sounded sweet clean but that drive was HORRIBLE!!

+1 who is looking for a good solid tube amp and plays mostly blues and rock... I have a serious SRV jones going right now, used to own a Blues Jr. back when I was starting to really play guitar and was mostly a keyboards/bass player. Now I am full-time into the guitar playing, putting together a new band in which I will be the only guitarist, and I'm seriously considering the DRRI. Had given thought to the Mesa TA-15, the VOX AC15, or one of the HRD series, but I have problems with the drive on them... I remember playing with other bands, as a bass player, in which the guitarists always had BF Twins or Supers back in the 70s and 80s, but I don't want to blow my head off and think each of those are too much power for what I am doing these days. I love the sound of a cranked Twin Reverb, but it will rattle your skull at the volume at which it seems to break up nicely.. 22 watts sounds about right, and even the Blues Jr I used to own held up pretty well plugged into a 4x10 Ampeg cab up against another guitarist, bass and a loud drummer! Anyone like to add anything to this? I'd love to hear other opinions, in case I might have missed something...

I can tell you that since I bought my drri a year and a half ago that I am quite content with my tone .Its my primary gigging amp these days.It has the nicest clean tone and with a few pedals ,I get all the tonal range I need. Our other guitar player has an AC15 and I have no trouble holding my own.The reverb is really sweet too.I just recently replaced the power tubes in it , but other than that , hardly a hiccup. You wont be disappointed.

The real Tweed Deluxe is a 5e3 circuit and only runs around 12 or 13 watts. Are you referring to the Blues Deluxe or HRDlx with the Tweed covering?

The 5e3 is a seriously different animal.

If he is referring to the tweed amp EC played at Crossroads 2004 , it is a Tweed Twin.A far cry from a blues deluxe .But you are right Supro, the tweed deluxe (the tweed circuit , not the covering) is a seriously different animal. But getting back on point, the drri has much better cleans than the blues deluxe.I have had both .We wont even mention the reliability factor of each.

Hot rod delux is a great amp, I used to play through this amp and it never disappointed me. currently I am using a Messa Transatlantic Head with THD 2x12 cab- this works perfect for me.

The Mesa Transatlantic is a great sounding amp. My HRDlx was a POS.

63supro I was wondering why did you get rid of your DRRI? I know you speak highly of them.

That hand-wired '57 Tweed Twin seems to have a KILLER tone. I'd love to try one, but none of the shops around have one setup to play. (you know they want to keep the bubble-gum chewing kids grimy hands off the thing--- or something). Maybe another good reason to venture out to Norms Rare Guitars. Anyone out there have one of these, that EC used at the Crossroads Concert?

I don't own one. I've had several Deluxe Reverbs through the years and have borrowed and rented some 65 reissues. The DRRI is pretty darn close to some of the originals I've owned. I've never killed one on stage. My HRDlx died on three separate gigs.

The reason why I sold them were because my needs changed. I played large venues for a while and needed more power. I went through a Bandmaster, Sunn Scepter, A couple of Ampeg's then I had a 100 watt 76 SF Twin for over 30 years, now I don't need a ton of power because my glory days are gone and wanted an amp with a little more versatility than a DRRI and went to an Egnater Rebel 20. I'm real happy with it. I'm not brand loyal by any stretch of the imagination. I get what I feel suits my needs at the time. I'll sell an amp, but I can't seem to bring myself to sell a guitar. My 63 Supro was my first electric and I got it when I was 11 years old. I'm 56 now. LOL

I still have visitation rights for my Twin. It went to a great home.

Funny all i do now is play at home and give lessons and i flat out love my (new to me) TRRI.
Loud as all get out !, lucky for me (blessed) my subdivision has 3/4 to 0ne acre plots and my neighbors are not up my tail feathers, i have a huge studio and can let her go except when the wife is snoozing (tough red head).

I went through all of the tube rectified low wattage amps, till i stumbled on this twin Reverb in a no brainer trade deal, now its all I want to play.

Funniest part is it all started with a country player i know talking me out of my DRRI in a trade deal for a mesa and some other stuff.

Yep I'll buy another DRRI as soon as the right deal comes around.
