I would turn them on and let them warm up about once a month...I have heard from pretty reliable sources that is keeps the components in good working order. Maybe Arjay will come along shortly and give us the technical reasosn why that is a good thing.

IMHO.

+1

It's wise to switch an amp on periodically to let the components "cook" for a while, especially electrolytics in the filter and biasing circuits. Thirty minutes' playing time each month should suffice.

+2 Don't leave them just sit. My Twin started to sit so I sold it to a good home with visitation rights.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have had my bass amp for 30 yr's and there were periods i didn't use it. Just keep it clean and dry.

I was wondering about that myself Alain. I've got one amp and guitar (with new strings) that have sat a year without playing. I guess I should take Arjay's advise and play them 30 min. a month.

Seriously. I have professional flash equipment and if you don't use it often enough, the caps go bad. I was told the caps need "forming" every once in a while. Just turn it on for a little bit.

Hmmmm. I wonder how long the average amp sits in a box from the date of manufacture through final sale to a customer? A couple of days? Couple of weeks? Couple of months? A year or more? How many other electrical/electronic devices do you have in your house that don't get used regularly? Not something I ever worried about.

How many other electrical/electronic devices do you have in your house that contain huge electrolytic caps that may retain a HV charge for extended periods?

Not that I really sweat this stuff either (my '78 Twin once sat unused for nearly three years) but it doesn't hurt to power an amp up periodically to "keep the juices flowing" as it were. Like driving a stored vehicle once in a while to keep the tires from developing flat spots as it sits in the garage.

Large flat screen tvs, my 7-channel home theater AVR. Not sure what the size of the caps has to do with it. Unless, in this case, size really does matter.

Radial tires don't develop flat spots like the old bias ply tires did in the past. My 64 Galaxie sits all winter in my garage with the tires pumped up to 35 psi and I've never had a tire flat spot. The worst part of storage like that is that the gas evaporates out of the carburator float bowls (remember those) and they have to be manually refilled before the car will start. With a stored vehicle, periodic driving is mostly to keep things lubricated.

Do they sit unused for months on end?

Think of the electron flow through an amp's various components as "lubrication". It's why the military mandates regular performance evaluations and inspections of electronic equipment, even during long-term storage.

The prosecution rests.

dang right you should. i pulled out 3 amps a couple days ago.
all 3 gotta go in for clean up and repairs. 2 of the amps are SS of all things, the other is a tube head. its been 16 yrs since either of the 3 have been turned on. i knew not to turn on the tube head, but was in shock that the SS amps now need some attention.
for a yr now ive been turning on my amps once a week for half hour. there are several ive had stuffed away that will probably need to go in for a once over. these arent in a place where i can get them their half hour each week.
to bad arjay dont live closer. i would be more than happy to come by on "amp day" and heat them suckers up.
