Hi,

I've just bought a USA Telecaster Standard (love it) and I'm struggling to get the right sound through my Hot Rod Deville.

I don't seem to struggle too bad with the clean channel, but do find that I use clarity when I switch to chord playing.

When switching to overdrive I'm just not happy with the sound. I've never been the best at getting the right balance of my settings on any amp and have spent most of my life going through a Line 6 POD to get the sound I want. I realise now that this has done me no favours.

Can anyone recommend any settings for me to try. A nice clean sound which when switched to overdrive would deliver a nice bluesy crunch. I don't want that metal sound but would like that nice "bite" you get from the treble. Not to the point where it's making the dog cry though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Hi davecaplyn,

The Hot Rod's drive channel isn't known for it's great sound. It is the same with my HRDlx, I didn't care for the drive channel (a bit harsh with single coils), and used pedals on the clean channel for the sounds that I wanted. You may want to experiment with different preamp and/or output tubes to get a better drive channel sound. I use the GT12AX7-C in all three spots in my HRDlx (preamp V1 and V2,and pi V3), and that was a big improvement for the drive channel, much smoother and warmer, but very touch responsive, and I get great squeal and crunch with changes in pick attack. It was such an improvement that now I don't use any pedals with the amp, and simply use the foot switch to change from clean to drive/more drive. I still use the stock GT red label output tubes.

Almost forgot! Here are the settings that I use on my HRDlx, same for clean and drive.

Unfortunatly HR's use the same channel between clean and overdrive consequently it is difficult to change the sound in both channel (bass medium treeble) exepted that the drive has less bass due to a high pass filter inserted by relay in drive mode. Personnally I use the drive channel just for an extra gain when needed (Telecaster) or I made all setting in drive mode and don't use the clean (especially with my Washburn). 8)
As Shimmilou suggested, pedals can be a good option.

I agree with Tissan. The common tone controls between the clean and drive channels makes it difficult to do what you want. But of course, if you want separate tone controls for each channel, you can bet that Fender, or anyone else for that matter, would increase the price by 40% to 50%. For my limited playing I find the Boss FDR-1 pedal gives me the drive I need without changing my coloring too much. (it takes some experimenting with the bass and treble on the pedal.)

Usually, I use my Hot Rod Dlx on drive and only go clean if someone wants some kind of 60's style music. Then, the same pedal I mentioned above has a great little vibrato/tremolo.

i use my hrdvlle quite a bit live with both strats and teles. I don't use the drive channel much at all really. when I do, I just use "drive" (the "more fizz" option I just don't have any use for) for a bit more gain and kick in my old tube screamer if I'm looking for some overdriven tube sounds. On another note, my eq, presence, and reverb look similar to what shimmilou posted. My "drive" knob is dialed back to 3, maybe 3.5 though.
