Hi all!

First off, thanks in advance for any help you can provide - normally, when something's wrong with a guitar/amp I own, I generally take it straight to the service shop. However, given that this new amp weighs approx. 80 lbs and I live on a fourth floor walkup, I'm inclined to see if this isn't something I can suss out myself before bringing it in to be fixed.

So, I bought this new Fender Twin at Guitar Center - it was a floor model, but apparently pretty fresh out of the box. Anyway, sounded great in the store - didn't detect any issues, amazing tone, etc. I get the thing home, and it still sounds great except for one thing - when I'm not playing it, there's a variable, constant hissing/static.

A few details about the noise - it's constant whenever the amp is turned on, though it does seem to fade when the amp is played for a while. It bears absolutely no relationship to the volume/EQ settings, input chosen, guitar cable, guitar, or whether or not there's even a guitar plugged in - if both the amp and standby switch are on, the hiss is there. It's also independent of whatever outlet I plug it into.

So, what should I do? Is it the pre-amp tubes? The power tubes? I really hope it's something that simple - I don't have any spare tubes, but is there a way I can test it?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

The very first thing I would do is to move the amp as far from where you have it now and try again.
Interference from lighting, and a long list of other stuff is what i would rule out first.

Since this is a hiss issue with no evidence of 60Hz hum, I'd rule out a power problem or a situation involving collateral noise from a nearby device.

If it's a pre-amp tube problem (and it may very well be) you can try some swapping to try and nail the source of the noise down.

First off, try removing V1 from the chassis then powering the amp up. If no change is noted, re-install that tube and remove V2. If the symptoms persist, try swapping V3 and V6. If these changes do not cure the hiss then the problem is likely something other than the pre-amp tubes.

If the power tubes are biased too cold (a distinct possibility with a new amp and factory tubes) that might also be a contributory factor. Four flights of stairs or not, for the money that your amp cost I would return it to the store for repair or replacement.
