Anybody have much experience with these? I've heard they're widely considered one of the best solid state amps of all time. I'm kind of interested in getting a good solid state amp for volume versatility, but mainly just for in the bedroom.

have had a JC-120 for about 10 years. these are the best-of-the-best solid state amps. chorus is the best in the business. as always, these amps sound best when set to relatively clean. the JC-120 is not a "bedroom" amp, it has power, it is big, and there's weight - it is a roadworthy gigging or studio amp. Roland makes some very respectable "cube" amps. in between cube and the JC-120, there are the mustangs. or a used cyber twin. lots to choose from, good luck.

on the JC-120, this amp, like all amps, has its own sound. it seems to fit well with a lot of music, pedals go very well with it. some like it, some don't, a buddy of mine has one just to have one - he's a bit of a collector. try it and see if it's for you.

ciao,
johnny.

I have the JC77 -- 2 10's
http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLAND-JAZZ-CHORUS- ... 33674634db

Its an awesome amp.. Dont let anyone tell you that you cannot play the blues or rock with this amp... And certainly its great for jazz...

That crystal clear sound makes a great foundation for your effects...

And it was only about $200 used :?: ....

The make about 4 different varieties/configurations of the Jazz Chorus... So, if the 120 is too big or too loud, you can get one of the smaller ones.. I recommend the 77 ...

I highly recommend the jazz chorus... and say its probably the most under rated under appreciated amp in history...

Exactly... I have heard the Roland Jazz Chorus before.
4 words: HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!

Seriously... you'd have set the volume on about 0.375 for it to be a bedroom amp!

i dont know anybody thats dimed one of these suckers and lived to tell about it.
uncle ted used them, clapton used them, i think BB King too im not sure.
a very underrated under used amp. those that have them usually wont part with them, even if they arent currenty using them. some of the clearest cleans you will ever hear anywhere from anything.

All great comments. I'm inexperienced with solid state amps so I wasn't sure. I was always under the impression that you get relatively the same signal tone no matter the volume level with them. Is this not always the case? I know the speaker type and configuration throws some variation into the equation but holding this and everything else constant.

I echo the sentiments I've seen here. The Roland JC is legendary. When I was in high school, I'd go to the local music store to play around (like I had any money to actually buy anything). Everybody wanted to play through the JC 120. The chorus is so...ooooooohhh! Much, much too loud for a bedroom, or really any dwelling less than 25,000 sq ft., but if you do happen to live in a castle, this IS the amp for you. I wish I lived in a castle - yeah, one with a dungeon and a mote and everything. Then I would...wait...uh, sorry about that. Anyway, it's an awesome amp, but way too loud for home use. Also, seems like the price on these has gone up by a couple hundred dollars over the last 6 months.

The JC120 is one of the best amps ever made when it comes to clean tone. Many professional jazz guys use this amp. It's been around for many years with good reason. Well built, great tone, and fairly affordable. Those who say that any solid state amp isn't good haven't played through a JC120. If it's a great clean amp you want with plenty of volume this is a great choice. They aren't cheap though at around $1000, which is quite a bit compared to other solid state amps.
