I´ve considered the Weber line of speakers for my ProJR. But I tought the Jensen´s were better in that department.
Do you think the Weber AlNiCo Signature 10" selling for $40 bucks will do same job the Jensen P10R would ?
If the answer is "yes", then I would go a different line of thought for this upgrade, keeping it a little cheaper on the tubes as well. Maybe going Tungsols all the way.
GAS is a $@!&* aint it ?

Now, not quite sure. But, I don't think TungSol ever made EL84's, except in the very early 1960's. The tube I've been using is the Reflektor made Russian 6N14P-EV. Also called EL84M by Sovtek.

If you are interested make sure that the Russian tube have that "-EV" suffix. These are all mil spec tubes with OTK passed stampings.

You can get them fairly cheap on EBay. And I've had no issues with the Russian sellers.

The 6N14P-EV is built to the old RCA 7189 standard. They are tough and can take a lot of plate voltage and bias current. Dark and growling tone. Last a long time.

FWIW. Here's some listings:

Now were talkin! Same quality of Jensen P10R for half the price?! No brainer! I´m sold on webers! But if I go for a 40bucks speaker, I would be non-sense to spend hundreds on tubes. I guess the Tungsol 12ax7 for v1/v2 and JJs EL844´s are on the target again! Any suggestions on that price range?
Hard to make up my mind you might think! I´m just on GAS!

To reduce the amp's gain (and hence, the volume) you might try the 5751 in your V1 or V2 positions (or both).

+1 I use one in my Egnater Rebel 20 in V1. It dropped the gain a little and made it more suited for what I do. I use the NOS JAN Phillips 5751. Not real expensive and quiet too.

That wont give him the early breakup he wants...unless he uses a pedal...that just drops the volume..those tubes dont do it for me...they really suck the life out..everybody thinks because SRV used them they are the bomb..SRV used a tubescreamer and cranked his amps..that Weber speaker is his best bet...it will give him a nice smooth breakup and wont be overly loud..and use a NOS JAN 7025..

I don't find 5751's suck the life out of anything. It smoothed out the gain of my amp. It didn't drop the volume much at all. It made the amp a little quieter too. Just for the record, I used the JAN 5751 long before I ever heard of SRV and long before they were NOS. :roll:

I do agree the Weber would be his best bet.

Basically the 5751 falls between a 12AX7/7025 and a 12AT7/ECC81 in the "pecking order" of subminiature dual-triodes and their respective gain factors.

Yep, that's right. :roll: Been playing guitar for close to 45 years. At least 25 professionally. The guy who lived across the street from me was a TV and audio repairman and used to retube and bias all my amps when needed. He also explained and demonstrated the effect different preamp tubes and the effect different gain factors had on my amps. In 1965, I had no idea who SRV even was. I know a little more than you think I do. :shock:

Oh im sure you know about preamp tubes...which is why when the original poster wanted breakup at a lower volume i suggested a more ineficient speaker and a 7025, which still regains a gain value of a 12AX7 ..but much quieter and better overall tone.. it would be easy to just agree. A 5751 has less of a gainstage therefore less breakup ..now its great for where a AT7 lies..and actually will warm up up that spot on a circuit..i was just trying to help the OP get what he needs..If he had a Hotrod Deluxe and wanted to tame that horrible drive channel then i would reccomend a 5751 ...peace

check this mod out, i know, i know you want to lower decibels but this is a very tempting mod, if i had a projr, because you can add a really nice 12 inch weber speaker.

just a thought.... :mrgreen:

Thanks to all you guys for the efforts on deciding the best choices for my modification.

My upgrade list is at the moment like this:

* Weber Signature Series 15W Alnico 10" Speaker $40.00
* JJ/TESLA EL844 (6bq5/EL84) Matched Pair $26.25 (are the Sovteks better?)
* TUNG-SOL REISSUE 12AX7 TUBE $13.00 (for V2)
* NOS Philips 7025 12AX7A ECC83 ruggedized sylvania 12AX7 $49.99 (for V1)

As you guys can see, the speaker has been changed from the Jensen P10R witch is 25W and the Weber as 15W on an earlier breakup and half the price. Now I can see the importance of the quality for the V1 tubes, as if this guy can define the tone of the amp by itself.
What about a Weber MiniMASS 15W Attenuator ? Tone sucker or not ?
Keep the suggestions coming mates, Im really learning a lot from you guys!
