It´s time to upgrade this little bugger!

Image

My goal:
1 - Early breakup.
2 - Downgrade on db output.
3 - Sweeter sounding.

I´ve done some research, and found that the better upgrades for it as far as money can buy should be something like this:
1 - Jensen P10R 25W 10" Alnico Speaker
2 - JJ/Tesla EL844 Matched Pair Goldpins
3 - Tungsol 12AX7 Pair Goldpins

In my research I´ve found some comments on "standard" vs. "balanced" 12ax7 tubes. What differs them and is it really an enhancement to get balanced 12ax7 ? I´ve found that only JJ has those EL844 tubes, claiming to drop the overall output of the amp. Does any other manufacturer make those kinda tubes ? I´ve found yet the Tungsol should be the most sweet sounding 12ax7 tubes, is that correct?
If you guys have any better suggestions on this upgrade, please say the word.
Thanks!

I wouldn't pay the premium for the gold pins. The standard JJ's will do just fine. Some of the finest tubes ever produced didn't have gold pins. I've heard nothing but cold reviews on the EL844 power tubes. But tone is very subjective.

Skip the gold-pinned tubes and put the savings into a Celestion Gold G10 instead.

The EL844´s were on my target only because the output db drop. If I was looking for regular EL84´s I wouldnt mind going exclusively on JJ´s either. Thanks for the suggestion!

I thought of the Celestion Gold G10 as well, but regardless of the price around $200 bucks, I can´t seem to find someone to ship it to Brazil, and in the other hand its 40W, and my intention is for lowering the power of my ProJr and giving it an earlier breakup, so a 25W tops is the speaker I´m looking for. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the suggestion! Never heard of this "NOS JAN 7025". Is it a PHILIPS line ? Is there a place I can buy with worldwide shipping ?
Sorry about my ignorance, but, what differs putting 12ax7´s on V1/V2 ?

You can get them here...they should ship worldwide..Jan stands for Joint Army Navy..there are millitary grade...so the best components are used...you will love the tone ..JJs..Tungsol or any of the new stuff ive tried doesnt come close..they are worth the money...

http://www.tubedepot.com/nos-7025.html

always grab any old tube equipment that has 12AX7s...stereos...reel to reels..they alot of time will have 7025s ...thats how long they last..i found 2 recently on the side the road in a old console stereo...they are Phillips...

The 7025 is a military/industrial development of the dual-triode 12AX7, with a lower noise floor for better S/N ratio. It was made by most US and European tube manufacturers, as well as a select few Japanese companies. The "JAN" is a US military designation that represents "Joint Army-Navy". Tubes labeled as such are the most durable bottles ever produced. By anybody.

NOS JAN 7025! I guess I´m sold on those. You´ve just hit the "sweet" button on my goals list for this upgrade.
Is there any NOS EL84 version that delivers lower output like the JJ´s EL844´s ? This is for hitting the "lower db output" button on me!
Thanks for the suggestions!

To reduce the amp's gain (and hence, the volume) you might try the 5751 in your V1 or V2 positions (or both).

OMG! For the price I must buy along that TubeCube case, If I broke one of those on shipping I would cry as mary!
What defines them as a lower output EL84 ? JJEL844 claims to drop a few dBs from the overall output, thats what sold me on them.

I WOULD NOT GET GOLD PINS, esp from any Eastern European/ Russian manufacturer. Their plating procedure is very uneven. Often leaving you with pins so thick, they ruin the sockets. And their tone is no better (IMHO) than regular steel pins (of the correct diameter).

I call it the "Johnny Wad" pin effect.... if you catch my drift.

I cant really comment on the JJEL844 ..ive never tried them..the NOS americans just sound so sweet..the regular JJs...which is what i run out live are good for more headroom and they seem pretty durable for the price..its real important to have a good V1 in there though..i really makes a big difference..i would try that first...and a little Weber speaker for 40 bucks...and i bet you will love that amp..
