Hello! I'm lookin' to purchase a Fender tube head for my 16 ohm 2 X 12 cab. I need something clean, chimy, quiet (hum wise). Similar in sound to a blues junior or DRRI. I'll use distortion/overdrive pedals for the dirty tones. I've never used a Fender head and need some suggestions. Thanks!

Hi catch153,

You could use either one of the amps that you mentioned as a head for your 2x12. Just unplug the amp's internal 12 inch speaker and plug in your 2x12 cab. Both amps are 8 ohm, but will work just fine with your 16 ohm cab. You can also use the DRRI with the internal speaker AND the 2x12 cab.

I have been considering a head also, the newly announced Super Sonic (SS) 100 watt head sounds very promising although I haven't tried one as they haven't received any at GC yet. They have a switch to reduce power out to 25 watts.

If it's possible to re-wire the cab for 4Ω operation, you might consider a vintage Tremolux, Bassman, Bandmaster, or Showman head. Few tube heads idle as quietly and deliver classic clean tone like a blackface or silverface Fender.

Thank you for the suggestions! I'm definetly gonna try out a Supersonic 22. It looks just the right wattage, it gets squeaky clean, with a decent overdrive channel. If it doesn't hum/buzz too much I'll probably purchase one. I will also try hooking my blues junior up to my cab as well. God Bless...

+1 All the SS 22 amps I've tried are anything but quiet. They hissed like a bag of Cobras.
Also the few I've tried lost some magic over 4 on the volume dial. YMMV

I actually meant the supersonic 60 head, not the 22 combo (I have read where they can hum a bit). I think its now between the super-sonic 60 and the pro-sonic head. There's a prosonic on ebay now around 500.00, it looks like new super-sonics are around 1000.00. Hmmm.....

Yep, they do too as well as the Custom Vibrolux Reverb. I had a 65 BF Vibrolux Reverb till some scumbag stole it. :| You'd be way better off with a SF amp. Prices are still reasonable and they're built like tanks.

The Prosonic would certainly be a viable option, and it wouldn't require any re-wiring of the speaker enclosure. On the debit side, they're not exactly known for their prototypical "blackface Fender clean". They do sound pretty nice though -- sort of a cross between a Fender and a Mesa-Boogie. The selectable rectifier type permits a wide variety of amp emulations.

+1 my Bandmaster stays clean all the way to 10! It is extremely quiet too. You'll get beautiful Fender clean through a 2X12 cab.

Find you a Bandmaster like this one, you can pick one up for $500-$600...
