Went to power my amp up the other day and the power tubes don't go on? Anybody else have this problem, any suggestions on how to fix it or what to look for?

Thanks!

Hi kidboy500,

What kind of amp do you have? Never heard of a Deville Deluxe. :? Do the preamp tubes "light up"? :?:

Awesome, one of my favorites! I presume that you mean that the power tubes (output tubes) don't "light up" with the orange glow. Do your preamp tubes light up? :?:

Yes, my power tubes do not light up at all, cold, my pre-amp tubes do.

OK. All of the tubes use the same filament supply (the filament, or heater, is the part in the tubes that glow orange- "light up"), so if some of the tubes light up then the supply is likely good. With the power to the amp turned off, first make sure that the output tubes are firmly seated and haven't come partially out of the socket, and if they are seated already, try removing them both and reinserting them. You will have to press the tube retainers away from the tubes base to remove them. Solder joints would be the usual suspect for a problem like this, but it could be a number of things. Do you have a meter and know how to use it to check some of the voltages inside the amp? We can start at the tube sockets and check to see if the sockets may be the problem, or something else.

Oh wow...I was hopping for a fuse or something, I'll check the tube sockets, but after that I might have to bring it to my repair guy. It's strange becasue I haven't used the amp in over a year, took it out of retirement for something and it's a good thing I tested before the gig because the amp just wouldn't work.

Thanks for your help by the way!

The only other option, without opening up the amp, would be to try a known good set of output tubes. If you do end up taking it in for repair, please let us know what you find, or what the repair shop finds. :)
