I just bought a 212 Deville yesterday and I love the sound. However I am having a huge problem with it. At volumes 2 or higher whenever I strike an A note hard I get this horrible scratchy crackling sound that lasts for about 3 to 4 seconds. Its only the A note, any A on the fret board. I'm playing a 1967 Danelectro Hornet. It has a very bassy tone and when I'm playing at high volumes I have to turn the bass on the amp all the way down and it is still very bassy. I have also tried playing my Telecaster through this amp and I get the same problem whenever striking the A's hard. Theres something wrong with that frequency, does anyone else have this problem or do I need to get my money back?

anyone who has this amp (or even worse- the deluxe) will recognize this problem. im pretty sure that these noises are due to the VERY CLOSE proximity of the tubes to the speakers. obviously the louder you play, the more air you move and thus the tubes take a bit of a hammering (literally)!
to see if this is indeed the problem unplug your internal speakers and plug in some external speakers to the external speaker jack and i bet the problem noise no longer exists, so long as the tubes aren't in the way of errant sound waves from the new speakers... its the combo curse im afraid

I disagree. There is something wrong for sure. Sounds like output tubes or solder joint.

I had the same problem, I have the Deville 212, I found that is was static from the dry air, I put the amp on a stand and raised the humidity to above 55%. This has seemed to fix my the problem. Or did you remove the foam rubber from around the 2 small tubes, it should not be removed I found out.

Do you think changing of power tubes may resolve this issue? :D

I did some research on exactly how these tubes are put together, and the cracking and popping sound could certainly be a bad tube, the filaments and the plates can work loose with the harsh vibrations. Here is an article on Musicians Friend that I found that explains the pre-amp tubes and the power tubes. There are electrical diagrams in the web and rectifier tubes are a bit more complex that you would think.

If it's new, return it.
