I love the EL84's in the Blues Jr. it still sounds like a Fender amp. It is a brighter sounding amp which I'm sure the EL84's contribute to and man do I love it. I like it best with a Tele or Les Paul.

My HRDeluxe has more of "that" Fender sound than the Jr. but I haven't really made a specific choice using one or the other except for larger gigs, then it's usually the HRDeluxe.
(6L6s, Presence & Wattage)
It was mentioned that a Strat can sound thin with the Jr. & I've noticed that when switching to the Strat from a hollowbody P90/HB for a different set. I've done the simple tone stack (BillM) mod to the Jr. & it seems to help dial in a little more warmth.
Just think of the ELs as a "brighter" bright switch and adjust accordingly.
(All this from a guy who's looking for an ol' Bassman & outboard Reverb unit!)

Now that's The Fender Sound. Now I'm GASsin' big time!
The only thing I'd have to add to that would be a Weber attenuator.
The Jr. & HRDeluxe have that Master & it sure helps the small venues.

Back to the original Fender/EL84s, it's different (and not bad at all.)

Hi FenderFreak63,

To post pics, upload them to a publicly viewable site such as Photobucket (free), then copy the "IMG" code generated for each pic (pop up menu when you hover over each pic), and paste the code in your post here. Then when you "Preview" or "Submit" your post, the pics will be visible. The code will look like the one in the code box below. :)

Code:

What it all boils down to is if the amp has the tone you like. Doesn't really matter what badge it sports. Comparing the HRD series to the Blackface series, the HRD series lacks tons in the tone department. I never had to do all kinds of mods to my Blackface or Silverface amps for that matter to get the tone I was after. I never even did tube swaps because they came with great tubes already. My HRDlx tried to send me down a bad tempting road of modifications so I sold it. It was also seriously unreliable too. The Blackface amp for me and the generation I grew up in defined the "Fender Sound". I originally bought the HRDdlx because I wanted something different than that classic sound. It sounded nothing like any of my other amps. Not even close.

Man, that amp has been around for a long time now. Why question their decision now, after nearly 20 years? Obviously it has worked out for them, or the Blues Jr. would have been long gone by now. Right now Fender makes a ton of Tweed reissues from Champ to Bassman, and another ton of Blackface reissues. It should be a moot point.

Just asked out of curiosity. The tube shortage story makes the most sense. Even now, where I live, the EL84s are more available than the 6v6s. Plus I think I just would've preferred the BJ w/6v6s. I know all their other small tube amps have 6v6s in them, so I could just as easily have asked different questions about them. Like "Why didn't they make a tube preamp in the SCXD?" etc. But I decided to pick on the BJ because it has most of the features a decent little tube amp should have. i.e. volume, master, mid, bass, treb, reverb, a decent sound at a fairly low price, which is why they're popular no doubt. Bottom line, I guess is, a person can always desire something in an amp that it doesn't have. :)

I must say I would be curious to hear a fender with el84's. I wont knock it till I try it but 84's are known for their distortion and breakup in the power section. A tighter distorted tone if you will. I have a couple of different amp's with 84's and they sound great in their own way, but they hardly have the true fender sound, nor would I want them to, just as I would'nt want my fender's to sound like them.

I guess the point I wanna throw out is what will seperate the fender w/el84's from the peavey classic-delta blues or Mesa Boogie Lonestar specials or so many of today's amps with that configuration. Again not putting it down, just curious. I would love to hear one.

another possibility is that a Blues jr with 6V6's would be a very close match to a Deluxe Reverb so fender may have just wanted to offer a slightly different flavor.

It should be obvious that the Blues Jr. has been a huge hit for Fender.

I have owned a tweed, a limited edition two tone burst ( to go with my 50th LE strat) a few mexi plain ones, a couple of made in the USA tolex models and one Relic tweed.

I play them for a while and pass them down the line.

Still think Fender should make a head version, bet it would do O.K.

Again untill lately There has not been a reliable source of "Good" 6V6's enough to fill an order like what you would need for the Blues jr. line, any idea how many of them fender sells in a day ??? I'll bet it is a bunch !!!

They're not bad. They have their own tone. Youtube is full of BJ clips. Both stocks & modified. A guy called Willybooger demos a number of Hotrod amps, including the BJ, & Peavey Classic amps, all in the same setting. The sound quality of the clips aren't bad.

Thanks shimmilou, I saw that just the other day. :) There's tons of good info on the BJ in the forum on that site. Billm knows his stuff.
