Why didn't Fender use 6V6s in the Blues junior instead of EL84s? Just curious.

Great question. Just something different I guess. EL84 power tubes were never really associated with the "Classic Fender Sound". Too chimey, aggressive sounding, gritty and and lack the "butter" of the 6V6. But are great for a more Blues tone. I still prefer the 6V6 just for its warmth and smooth natural distortion.

From what I have found in fender literature a few times was that during the last 20 years there has been a shortage of usable 6V6GT's (being produced now) and so the turned to the EL84 for their low power tube offerings.

I was wishing the latest BJ would have had 6V6's, it seems there is now a ready supply of decent 6v6's made by the new sensor guys.

That's funny, I never remembered a shortage. But then again way back I was getting 20-30 years out of my power tubes. Thinking back, I only remember one power tube shorting and that was in my 65 Vibrolux Reverb and that happened in the 80's LOL.

Arjay I bet would know for sure. He is the "god of knowledge" of all things Fender and tube driven. The guy is an amazing wealth of tube history.

If my memory serves me, That was a statement in Aspen Pitmans tube amp book

 Fender already has plenty of amps that use the 6V6. If Fender had used 6V6 in the BJr, those that dislike the BJr would have found other reasons to dis' it, probably would have called it a crippled Deluxe anyway. I think that it is nice to have a choice of a Fender amp with EL84s, and I like the $hit out of mine, it rocks. :D

I'll second the call...Retroverbial, wherefore art thou? :)

Leo used 6V6's for a reason and the tone of the Fender 6V6 powered amps is legendary. He didn't use EL34's either. Fender amps had their own voice. I'm not saying using EL84's are a bad thing, I just find it funny when people who own these amps say it's the "Classic Fender Clean or Sound". It really isn't. It's a new Fender sound. I really like the combination of the 6V6 and EL84 I get with my Egnater. Kind of like Fender meets Vox, but not quite. For me I get the best of both worlds to any degree I want. I still lean more toward the 6V6 side. It's like butta.

Yeah, I agree that the EL84s are more a classic Vox sound, and EL84s are hardly "classic" yet for Fender. Unless of course you know some geek that can modify your amp, then all bets are off.

Yeah, it's no biggie if that's what you like. I find the 6V6 a little more durable. I notice in my Egnater, the EL84's seem to through a little more heat. It's not a true "Fender" sound to my ears, just different.

Maybe I've played way too many classic Fender amps before they became classics and I'm biased. I've played out of some modded Blues Jr and Blues Deluxe amps and though they sounded considerably better, they were still missing the mark by quite a bit at least to my ears. Modded on two separate JRs by both Fargen and Billm. I do understand we all have differences of opinion as far as tone goes.

I do see what Supro means.Personally I like the blues jr with my humbucker equipped guitars .To my ears it makes the strat sound thin .i have a el84 amp (blues jr) a 6v6 (drri) and a 6l6 (59 BM).There is somethig special sounding about the 6v6s and a strat. It has that sparkle and some beef in the low end .Gives a more balanced tone.Put my semi hollow or my lester thru the blues jr and it sounds nice and gritty. Sometimes it doest sit well in the mix though.JMHO.
