Hi Retroverbial,

Another Silver Geezer down in Grenada here. I wounder if you have any advice for me?

In the early 1970's I was playing a Les Paul custom through a 100 watt Twin Reverb w/JBL's....worked very well, murder to carry............I like Fenders warm tones and cut through well in band setting of the day.

Today we are a group of 3 silver hair people, 2 guitars and a harmony/backup vocal.
I have 4 guitars, a Taylor Ns74ce with Fishman matrix pickup,a Taylor 810ce w/Fishman Prefix , a 1970 Martin D35S 12 fret that is having a LR Baggs Anthem installed as we speak..........my electric is a 1980 Epiphone ES335 type w/pearly gates pickups...if it had P90's it would be a Casino..........a very,very sweet guitar.
I play my acoustics through a LR Baggs Venue DI , acoustic is at least 80% of what we play evn though our song lists are mostly Clapton, John Lennon, Santana, Peter Gabriel, Little Feat , originals and some Bob Marly raggea........we're very proud of our renditions of Laya and Black Magic Woman on nylon guitars.

Anyway, the point is mostly I play acoustic guitar...right now I'm playing trough my Twin Reverb , which in even an outdoor club setting I can't get the amp vol over 2 without blowing the front row over and the tone is too barky and treble.. back the treble off and I get mud.
I was thinking of trading my Twin for a DRRI or am I going to get the same bark quack and mud or will being able to get volume up around 4 or so will the tone mellow out.....I really don't want to have 2 amps.
Thanks for the input,
Fred

A Deluxe Reverb RI would be nice. What I did awhile back, was buy a non-reverb Princeton SF for a very good price (prices on Ebay are kinda high, now). Went through the usually 'lytic cap change-outs and put it into a 12-inch cab. And a Celestion gold Alnico speaker (which is FINALLY starting to break-in).

Using an old HD28 with Fishman pickups, the darn thing sounds as good as my SWR Strawberry Blonde amp (without all the dials to twist). Remarkably warm and responsive. And when I crank the puppy past "6" it sounds very good. That typical tasty 6V6GT compressed tone. Lots of harmonics.

Well, just a thought anyhow.

I'm just a bedroom and family-type musician, and don't have to play to a sizable audience like it sounds that you do shipwrights. I have a DRRI and a Martin D16GT with a Fishman undersaddle pickup. My problem is not volume, but feedback (even at low volumes). I put a Boss GE-7 Equalizer in the signal path, and I can adjust the sliders (there is a master volume slider too) to attenuate both the tone and feedback. It's not perfect, but it works up to about 7 or 8 before nothing can control the feedback. That Twin's a lotta power, so I don't know if it will work for you. But it is a less expensive option than a new amp.

A DRRI is probably much more appropriate for your current performance situation, Fred.

Prices for used silverface Twin Reverbs on the secondary market are not that favorable at the moment (even with the premium upgraded speakers) so be prepared to take a hit should you opt to sell yours. If you enjoy the JBL sound, you might consider installing on of your D120Fs into a DRRI. I have a 15-inch D130F in mine which absolutely roars.

HTH
