Hey guys...

I have a new Fender Frontman 65R amp and really like it's clean tones. The drive channel is a bit harsh with my Strat's bridge pickup, but a little tweak of the tone knob can easily cure that.

I also have an old Digitech RP7 processor too, but I mostly use it to record with. I tried fiddling around with linking it in with the effects loop on the Frontman 65R and at first, the sound was so loud, it almost blew me across the room!

My main question: Do you guys prefer to use the effects loop, or do you just run your guitar through your effects then into your amp?

I would run that pedal through the front of your amp. If you are using it for overdrive, run it through the front. Use the loop for modulation effects. Phaser,Chorus, run OD through the front. I had a Frontman 65R , Great clean tones, crappy OD. you will need a pedal. I got rid of mine, it was way too loud for my apartment. 8)

defo through the front.
I quite like the drive with just a very small touch of gain, between 1 and 2 and the mid-contour switch off with my P90 neck pup on my tele but with my Strat I have to use a pedal no question.

I tend to just put all my effects through the front. I don't use very many and if I want more than just clean and drive I tend to just add some chorus and a bit of reverb - I am not that keen on the in-built one - to my ear it has a very small 'sweet spot' that seems to 'move' and I struggle to find it again when I put chorus through it........... so just got a reverb pedal instead.

BTW I really like my acoustic through the clean channel................ :?

Thanks for the replies... I was wondering about the Frontman 65R. It's a really nice (BUT VERY LOUD!!!) amp with sparkling clean tones. The OD channel does seem way too harsh like you could peel the paint off the wall with it, so, I don't plan on using it that much.

I've had that old Digitech RP7 for years and years, and it still keeps on going. I have some beautiful tones and settings programmed into it that I use for recording, but not playing live.

I might pickup a Boss Chorus or something just add a little color to the sound, as I don't need much by way of pedals. I'm more into classic rock, blues, oldies, and a little country rock. Kind of a mix of Eric Clapton, CCR, The Eagles, and a little Carl Perkins thrown in as well. :)

Hey guys....

Here's an update. I got that old Digitech RP7 Valve all reset, reprogrammed, and have some very nice tones that sound pretty good with the viciously loud Frontman 65R.

Clean setting
Volume: 2
Treble: 3
Bass: 6

Drive setting (not really used)
Drive: 7
Volume: 2
Treble: 4
Mid: 4
Bass: 6
Mid Contour button: IN
Reverb: 4

'95 Fender Strat
Volume: 8
Tone: 8
Tone: 7

Digitech RP7
Bank 1:1 -- Tube Blues (Distortion), Chorus, w/ a hint of Delay.
Bank 1:2 -- Clean, Chorus.
Bank 1:3 -- Overdrive, Delay (slapback echo)
Bank 1:4 -- Tube Blues (Distortion), Wah Wah (even though the Digitech's Wah sound sucks)

Bank 2:1 -- Tube Blues (Distortion), Flanger (i.e. Barracuda, Life In The Fast Lane, etc..)
Bank 2:2 -- Overdrive, Octave (mix full - sounds like a guitar & bass perfectly together)
Bank 2:3 -- Clean, Tremelo.
Bank 2:4 -- Saturation (Distortion), Pitch Shift (down 1 step)

All other banks and modes are left alone. All I need are these (so far) and the Frontman 65R sounds really good for a solid state amp. 8)

From what I understand, Fender is phasing out the Frontman line and pushing their DEC line and the newer Mustang line. Fender is now (trying to) compete with Line6 and other companies in the solid state amp modeling department.

I like my 65R, for the price i cannot complain. it has an ok drive (i agree a bit excessive). But if you keep the drive between 2 and 5 it can give you a nice modern edge with other effects. I am running a 94' Jaguar through it though so that could be the difference for the strat players. Single coil versus Double. It is sad that they are phasing out the Frontman line, it made a good inexpensive line of solid states. The amp is loud but CLEAN! My problem with line 6 has always been that you never get a true clean tone.

I had a 65R for a while. They do have excellent clean channels. Eventually I got tired of playing "safecracker" trying to get a useable home volume and switched to a 25R for my practice amp, and a Blues Junior NOS for my gigging amp.

The 25R is plenty loud to play gigs with a reasonable drummer. I had to put some screws through the bottom of the cabinet into the speaker board to cut down on the rattle at high volume though.

I also tried a Mustang II for a while, but I found I don't like amps that are that fussy and complicated.

Hey I got this suggestion from another forum member and you should really try it and see for yourself how good it works...run the output of your digitech to the Power Amp In of your effects loop...you bypass the amps onboard preamp that way and your volume will now be controlled by the digitech so turn the volume down on that thing. The results are really good. I have concluded this is about the best way to use any POD, or RP or whatever in conjunction with a real amp.

can anybody tell me from experience? I have just bought a secondhand Frontman 65r, with no footswitch. The reverb does not work, even though if I give it a bump, I can hear the springs reverbrating. I saw that the usual footswitch that came with it had only 1 button...so I am assuming that is for channel change, of course...and that there is a fault in the circuitry of the amp, from the input to reverb side...just bypassing it...any help out there please? NICE AMP, OTHERWISE!! :D
