i'm still discovering artists of the past that blow me away. i relate to super kid, im only 25 but i love alot of the older stuff. i visit countless parties on weekends, and i continue to loathe the music being played. you can imagine whats on their radios.

although there are some noteworthy artists coming out today. anyone in the philly area knows about wxpn. great station, with a great selection. never know what you'll hear. they spend decent time uncovering new artists, i suggest you all check it out. they have online streaming.

anyway, my latest "old" artist finds include Big Star and Fay Ray. I'm digging these bands right now.

haha I love the sound of my little toober ampeg... so dark and when cranked all the way up its got a distortion of its own...

Its seen better days, so I wonder what I'll do with it when it finally gives out... maybe keep it for sentimental value.

Or, maybe someday I could become an amp guru and bring it back to life...

i started playing around 84 or 85 i never got into the synth thing but i had solidstate and tube amps. i have always hung on to the tube stuff as much as i could eventhough i have sold some in the past. i hope they keep on improving the solidstate stuff and make it as resoponsive as the tube amps. so far i feel they have a way to go with it. think e.c. wth john mayall for a tube sound and feel or responce. when they can reach a solid state sound like that i wll jump on it. untill then i'll be in the tube amp camp. good luck to THEM.

Absolutely!

They sounded great (and still do AAMOF).

But nothing sounds quite like a Hammond B3 -- it's the sound that makes the hair of the back of my neck stand on end, especially when played through a Leslie 122 or 147.

And they're full of, you guessed it......vacuum tubes!

(my "brother from another mother" nails it!)

That's the sound that defines the electric organ, CB.

Nothing on earth, even Hammond's modern digital keyboards, comes close to that paradigm!

8) 8) 8)

The jam Monday nite would never be the same without that B3 and Leslie there! I'm so glad someone still makes an effort to bring it out every week... there's only one organ for me, that's it right there.

Indeed! I hope the owner has the dollies for the organ and a handtruck to move the Leslie.

yes Leslies have thier unique sound, but what gives them their unique sound isn't so much the tubes, it's the fact that the speakers rotate on a table. So not only do you get amplitude modulation, but you get Doppler shift, you get a non-uniform reverb from the bounce of the sound waves from the walls, and finally a periodic differential time delay (math & physics show that a Doppler shift is a rate of change of time delay).

Synths can also feed a Leslie for the same kind of effect.

Now go to http://www.hammond-organ.com/ to see a few things.
first, there's the Leslie122XB with traditional tube amplification.
then there's the Leslie 21 "a Leslie for the 21st century" which can be connected to any PA amplification setup, like a synth & amp

sooo, as you can see, there are choices, some traditional, some modern. Which is better? hmmm... depends... i tend to go 21st century.

ciao,
john.

To the original question: no problem. There are a gazillion of great new tubes still being produced. Philips JAN, Electro Harmonix, Sovtek etc ....

People who have ears immediately catch the tone. I have friends listening to my HiFi system the first time saying "wow, it sounds so natural". It's a tube rig.

Cheers

David
