Hi Lounge, I just bought a NEW Super Reverb Reissue (under warranty) and now I'm having second thoughts. There are a few issues and I don't know if they are normal or not.

1) If I turn the reverb up above about three on the dial, I get a nasty ringing that eventually grows into a squealing feedback if the amp is louder than about two. Cutting the bass out seems to help but that's no solution in my mind.

2) There is a ton of hiss in the speakers on the vibrato channel -- some, but not nearly as much on the normal channel. (These results are with the other channel's preamp tube removed and no instrument plugged in. With both V1 & V2 in I get, of course, a lot of hiss.)

3) I noticed that when I turn the volume up on the normal channel I still hear some reverb feedback.

I did swap a few of the 12AX7's around trying to troubleshoot (I'm skilled in electronics but not that experienced with tube amplifiers) and can make symptoms change some, but cannot make sense of the results. I can also say that tapping the tubes with a screwdriver doesn't reveal any noticeable microphonic activity.

Is it possible that what I'm hearing is normal and I just don't like it? Should I pick up some extra tubes and see if the problem goes away. Yes, I can take it back to the store but It's two hours away and the thing is heavy. I'm wondering if there is any obvious stuff to try before turning my brand new amp in for weeks of troubleshooting at the store's amp shop.

I appreciate your feedback. I know it's hard to troubleshoot a problem without being there. I'm just grasping at straws...

None of the symptoms you've described are prototypical of a normally-operating Super Reverb, or a SRRI.

If returning the amp is an option, I would do so. If you elect to exchange it for another, play the replacement amp right there in the store. If it doesn't whistle Dixie on the spot, do not accept it either.

Take it back, find you a used SR that's at least 37 years old, and never look back

The SRRI sounds nothing like an older SR IMO... you'll need to change speakers, replace tubes, couple of mods... for a lot less money you can find a nice SF SR that's been blackfaced and will be much happier! Mine is perfect and came with 6 extra speakers, $850, you can't beat that!

If you wanna spend more, for the same price as a new SRRI you can probably get a BF SR, it's up to you.

I agree with Arjay and Cedar...Take it back. There are a ton of good used SFSR out there, both Cedar and I both found one just recently and both were in excellent shape and have tone to die for...especially if you find a 73 or older. Just make sure you get one without the Master Volume and try to find one with the original CTS Alnico speakers...10 inch tone machines!

+1

There were two nice ones available on my local C/L earlier this month -- both were $850 or less.

True enough. But avoid those 70-watt versions as they lack the tube rectifier and are basically a Super Reverb in name only -- they really don't sound anything like the original (more like a Twin Reverb with only two output bottles).

Yep , and I believe the Twins were 135 watt versions during that time as well.

I never under any circumstances take an amp home without trying it out in the store. I usually ring it out for about an hour.
