I just returned from a small café concert with some friends who played a Vibroverb 1x15 (it must be a Custom Shop reissue??) and OH-MY-GUITAR-GOD did that amp sound sweet  :o

He played it with a '73 Strat and the tone was so incredible, big, 3D, open and full while not being harsh or piercing at all. Not really a twangy Strat sound but fat, round and well balanced.

He said it cost 3 times the cost of a Deluxe Reverb Reissue

Nice playroom there...

Isn't that amp the exact same cabinet and front panel as the Deluxe Reverb? It looks like it.

You have another speaker, he had the Special Fender-something in it.

Does it share curcuit with other Fender amps?

No -- the Deluxe Reverb is a shallower chassis, using 4½" chassis straps. The Vibroverb is deeper, requiring the 5½" type. Likewise, the overall chassis width is slightly greater with the Vibroverb.

The re-issue Vibroverb came standard with a Fender-spec Eminence 15" speaker (similar to the "Big Ben"). Mine is equipped with a 40-year old JBL D130F.

I use one of the reissue Vibroverbs you're talking about and yes, it really sings.

He's right about the price, when they came out they cost $2500 but luckily I got mine used for much less.

I think the Deluxe Reverb also has a Mid knob, which the Vibroverb does not.

I've been thinking about replacing the speaker with a JBL D130F like Arjay has in his.

Arjay, is your an original or a reissue?

I can say that JBL D130F is an amazing speaker. Very clean. But also midrange warm. At least in my Pro Amp running TS 5881's. I've never used the D140F, but that's also supposed to be quite a speaker, too. Anyone try the D140F?

Thanks!

The original Deluxe Reverb does not have a mid knob...I have several but no reissues...so I'm not sure about them.
I also have a 1966 Pro Reverb which is circuit wise very similar to the original Vibroverb although the Pro has 2x12s...Arjay knows this also...one could get a Pro Reverb change the baffle to a 15" and install a killer speaker and essentially have a Vibroverb.

One of these days I'm gonna add one of those VV to my collection... I see the re-issues go for $1500-2000 on ebay. It comes with an Eminence Legend 1518, a very efficient speaker, loud and clean but can be a little bright IMO. I've tried both Emi and D130F in my DRRI. My amp was so much louder with the Emi and didn't break up like it did with the D130F, so the choice of speakers really depends on what you're looking for... my favorite 15 in my DRRI was the EV SRO, but that sumbitch adds another 12 lbs to the amp! I settled on the Emi Big Ben, it's a combination of both EV and the Legend 15.

The DRRI does not have a mid knob.

The JBLs (D series) don't do it for me :? I talked to many guitar players about it, some love 'em and some hate 'em...

I have a 60's tone-ring cab that came with a D140F, I believe it was reconed as a D130F, sounds very similar to the D130F but a bit warmer and the bass is boomier. Both JBLs exhibit the same thing when playing clean, nasally highs that I didn't care for and it didn't keep the bass tight like I wanted to hear... but at a louder volume and with a tube screamer they start to sing! I really enjoyed having the JBL in there when playing live and the amp turned up with the TS kicked in, can't say the same about it when playing clean... my ears hear some weird highs that really annoy me :)

The D140F is a dedicated bass driver. Though it's based on the D130F (which itself is a variation of the full-range D130 hi-fi speaker), there are significant differences: The magnet gap is slightly wider to accommodate a beefier voice-coil former, which itself uses edge-wound copper ribbon rather than the aluminum of the guitar speakers. Likewise, the cone's suspension and surround are stiffer to help limit extreme cone excursions. The cone itself is ribbed rather than smooth to ensure smooth transition-coupling between the lower frequencies and the attendant harmonics.

I didn't know the Deluxe didn't have a mid knob. How does the midrange compare between the VV and Deluxe?

A chassis comparison between an original Vibroverb and an original Deluxe Reverb reveals near-identical pre-amp architecture between the two. Save for the Vibroverb's selectable bright switch, the component values within each amp's tone stack reveal fundamental equivalency. Where the tone begins to deviate can be most directly attributable to the output stage, as the differences between 6L6 and 6V6 become apparent. The larger 6L6 bottle delivers more low-frequency grunt, which the human ear usually perceives as extending into the middle range. Thus, the Vibroverb is generally judged to have more beef though both amps deliver tone which can only be described as "legendary".

As for a comparison between re-issues of these respective amps, I've never had the two side-by-side in the same room at the same time and cannot render an opinion. Likely my findings would be similar though. Of course, the speaker size cannot be discounted in the equation -- rightly or wrongly, a 15-inch speaker will usually be regarded as having more bass response than a twelve. All purely subjective to the individual player, of course.
