got a "nice" Raytheon 12AX7 (made in taiwan btw, is that unusual?)

makes a loud hum when placed in V1. switched spots between it and the tube that was in PI (12AT7 btw). Hum is now reduced 90%. the tone was nice in both scenarios i should add.

just curious, is the raytheon still on its way to death nonetheless? silly question, i would guess yes for the answer, but would a dying tube sound this good? had a nice full sound, i have no complaints with the results. it just confuses me, my experience is still low with tubes.

Typically the V1 spot will be the most sensitive for exposing a microphonic tube. If the tube functions fine in another spot and you like the tone, it's a perfect solution, no problem, it is a common thing to do. The 12AT7 has less gain than the 12AX7, and some like the 12AT7 for that very reason in whichever spot chosen. Good job. :)
