As a life long acoustic player, I'm relatively new to the 'electric' world. I have a 4 or so year old Deville...love the amp. But recently when I turn it on there is a loud 'hum/buzz'...when the drive level is increased the sound increases as well. Am I to assume that one or more of the tubes needs replacing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi gtnj,

Does it make the same noise with nothing plugged into the input Jack? In the drive channel you will have some hum and buzz that's normal, especially if you are using a single coil pickup guitar, and the noise will increase with increase in the drive or master volume. Has the noise gotten worse from the time that you started using it?

Amp on, nothing plugged in- minimal noise
Amp on, guitar plugged in - minimal noise
Amp on, guitar and foot switch plugged in - minimal noise

When foot switch is engaged and overdrive channel is selected, thats when the noise happens. The higher the overdrive is dialed on the amp increases the noise/hum, etc.

Any ideas, let me know.

Thanks,

GTNJ

I did have my Strat plugged in. Tonight I'll try my ES-335 and see what happens

Yep, sounds like the normal noise for a drive channel using single coil pups. If so, it will be a little better with humbuckers, but there will still be noise and hum to some degree on the drive channel.

Agreeing on Single Coil sensitivness and if you have the same noise on 335, as V2b is only used on drive channel, may be this valve failed.
