my 2 options are
1 start a pedal board
2 new amp.
my current amp is a fender frontman 15 and i am really wanting a vintage strat sound and a john frusciante style sound but i also will need a good distortion. What would work better an new amp or starting a pedal board. And right now i want to keep it under 300. What should i do.

Ouch!

That $300 budgetary cap really puts you between a rock and the proverbial hard place. Regardless, I'd look for a better amp first -- something with built-in OD and effects to at least get you started. The now-discontinued Deluxe 90 DSP might be a good place to start. I've seen them available on the secondary market for $200-$250.

You might want to try out the super champ xd. Or you might want to consider a multi effect unit w/an amp upgrade. Maybe a 2nd hand Frontman 25r w/a Boss me25 for example. Either way, I would upgrade the amp first. Good luck.

I agree with the other guys, Amp first pedals second. I would say either the Mustang II or the Super champ XD. I own a Mustang II and it has so many tones and FXs that it should be able to hold you over until you can afford pedals. And I've heard great things about the Super Champ.

Just got a super champ. I haven't had a chance to absolutely open it up, but with 16 voice selections and the built in effects it's a pretty sweet little amp. The effects sound great and for the price you can't beat it. Over the years I've amassed a pedal board with a LOT of money on it, but that was a little at a time.

Definitely get a good sounding amp first and worry about the tid bits later. If you don't have a decent tone to start from you'll be beating your head against a wall and not happy with any pedal you have.

When you get to pedals, I haven't heard all of them in person but I did buy a coolcat vibe from danelectro. I was in the market for a univibe and EVERYTHING is way too expensive for a normal working musician. I've never been a fan of danelectro, but listening to the demos on line and reading reviews I figured I'd give it a shot.

The coolcat vibe sounds really REALLY good. THen again, it's a real univibe effect using photo resisters. It does have some minor draw backs like the effect doesn't kick in until a second after you hit the switch and it does boost your signal a bit, but I like th signal boost. I bought it for I think 30 or 40 bucks on ebay brand new. For that price you can't complain one bit, but I've read some really good reviews on the other coolcat pedals. They are definitely well made from my experience.

When it comes to a pedal board I built my own out of scrap wood, velcro fabric, and spray adhesive. I use a DC Brick for power and never had a problem. Just a suggestion on a way to go for a pedal board.

You'd need to look used. Tube amps in that price range you may find a used Peavey Classic 30 or a Fender Vibro Champ or Super Champ. Solid State, you might find something like a Fender Frontman 212r. Just remember if you plan to do any gigging, a 15 watt amp will put you on the edge of being underpowered. You can always mic the amp, but if the band has a cheap PA system, you'll sound like arse.
