Just bought a Hot Rod Deville off ebay (great start I know)

I unpacked it today and started playing. Clean channel seems to work just fine with not much more noise than is to be expected. When I switched channels I got a really loud thumping noise. The only way I can describe it is a motor like sound. When I adjusted the drive it changed the "frequency" of the thumping. I recorded a video of it to give you a better idea

Is this a problem with my tubes? Or something else in the amp?

Any help would be great!

That's an odd one. Yeah, I'd start by subbing out tube for tube in the offending channel. And pray that solves the problem. If not you may have some motorboating issue with isolation of one or more of the gain stages, in the bad channel, and it's power supply source.

Which means a trip to a good tech to look for bad caps in the power supply feeding that channel.

That's my WAG on the thing. Good luck!

Hi benjamin.oakley,

Good idea BMW2002Ti, the easiest thing to try is to swap V1 and V2 (looking at the back of the amp, the farthest two tubes to the right). The other half of V2 is added to the signal chain for the drive/more drive channel, so if the noise is on the clean channel after swapping tubes, then the tube that was in V2, now in V1, is suspect.

Also added are different coupling caps, starting with C23, that was my first thought. Does it also make the same noise with nothing plugged into the input jack? And, what happens to the noise when you click to more drive?

I havent had a chance to swap the tubes but it makes the noise regardless if anything is plugged into the input. The noise just intensifies when I click more drive. I was looking at the tubes and gave each just a little flick and the second one (v2 i think you called it?) seemed to rattle slightly.

OK, that means that the noise is not caused by the guitar or cable. Try swapping the tubes V1 and V2 and see what you get (with the amp turned off). Looking at the back of the amp, the far right tube is V1, so right to left, V1 and V2 are preamp tubes, V3 is the phase inverter and V4 and V5 are the big output tubes.

If it isn't a tube problem then it is possibly a capacitor problem (coupling or power supply), or even a solder joint problem, requiring opening up the amp for inspection and exposure to lethal voltages.
