higher gain tubes will help, pedal would be best, OCD,wampler pedals are sweet, TS9 tube screamer will add bite

Hi cameron26

Just another suggestion, try the GT 12AX7-C tube in all three spots (three tubes, V1, V2, V3) for some vastly improved drive channel sounds while still maintaining great clean channel sound. I had never really liked the drive channel in my HRDlx or HRDvl, and for distortion/drive used the clean channel with pedals, until I tried these tubes and they were so good that I now just use my foot switch to change channels and don't use pedals with it any more, and this is with the stock GT output tubes.

nope ya gotta buy the tubes unless you know somebody that has them.
ask some folks like arjay, supro63, rebel, niki, ceri, see what they say about tubes. i just bought a NOS tube on here at the suggestion of a member and loved it.
nothing will give you a true marshall sound but a marshall. nothing will give you a true fender tone but a fender. these two amp companies have set the standards many many
yrs ago. folks have tried their damndest every since to copy them but they cant.
i like my ocd. it gives me a very warm, transparent tone thats not to over the top and NEVER EVER muddy. muddy is out. fulltone has a great reputation and ive never once heard of a bad report of them. the wampler too. you will get what you pay for in gear. honestly, the only dirt cheap pedal ive heard that was really worth a dang id the digitech
bad monkey. its cheap but sounds pretty darn good for the money. it has great reviews too.

Might want to look at the ZVEX Box of Rock and ZVEX Distortron.
I own neither and I'm trying to decide between those and the Fulltone FD2 and Plimsoul.

Good luck!

For a Marshall tone out of an American style amp I suggest the Rothwell Hellraiser Overdrive, This pedal was designed exactly for this application and was referred to me by email from the friendly staff at proguitarshop.com
Here is a link to their site and a great demo of this pedal played through a DRRI:

Well, making a DRRI sound like an old Marshall is gonna be impossible to some people's discerning ears. Nothing is gonna sound exactly like a Marshall but a real Marshall. I think the Hellraiser Overdrive comes about as close as you can get. There's also the Lovepedal Purple Plexi. I like it pretty well, but I don't think that proguitarshop.com carries it anymore. It can be found on ebay I'm sure. I can get a very Marshall-esque distortion out of my Fulltone GT-500. If the OP is really set on the quintessential Marshall tone, I'd suggest the new Marshall Class 5. It's 5 watts, single-ended class A, and you can crank it up to get a wonderful Marshall distortion.

If you want a Marshall sound, I would recommend the Boss Power Stack. I've watched tons of youtube videos about it and I think it sounds the closest to a cranked Marshall Stack without the Marshall stack.

After messing with all of the above + the OCD, I went with the ZVEX Distortron.
I liked the Box of Rock over the OCD but the Distortron had more fine tuning for me with my DRRI. Yes, I give up the foot-switch Boost feature but I liked having the ability to tune the lower frequencies to my liking. The Box of Rock uses the Distortron Engine for its pedal and that's what I liked. They're all fine pedals. They all claim to be able to give you the Marshall tone, but I wasn't necessarily looking for a "everything at 11" tone. If I did, I'd buy a Marshall. Might still in the future... Just wanted more controlled 'dirt' .

Also picked up a Danelectro Cool Cat OD for $16 on CL yesterday. V2 model, not V1 that had everyone in a knot about a year or so ago about it being an OCD clone. Very nice little pedal for short money. Didn't have the OCD to do a side-by-side and so I won't say it's as good but for what I remember of it, not bad! Utube has some vids on them.

All I had before this, and still own, is the Digitech RP250. I have lots of fun with that but I wanted to try individual pedals. And I can say that the sounds I get out of the Distortron and Cool Cat are very nice and clean vs the RP250. Less poking around to get that "sound". I won't get rid of the Digitech though. Still has a bunch of nice settings I like.
