Im back with a new fender:) I traded in my old Marshall cab and some cash and picked this up.Having a 6505+112 combo I missed the Fender cleans and sparkle,im pretty happy with it. Sounds good with the tele and breaks up nicely! prb will change the preamp tubes for sure, are these a fixed bias amp? How are you liking it?

Definitely one of my favorite amps. I put a Celestion Vintage 30 in it and have never looked back. Still have the stock tubes though. I personally don't have a problem with them but I'm sure I'll be pleased when I put in some better ones down the road. The cleans are not quite loud enough for some smaller gigs with a drummer, like I expected them to be, but getting an amp stand for it makes a world and a half of a difference.

You'll hear some folks complain about Fender not having the experience to do an EL-84 equipped amplifier but I could not disagree more. The Fender cleans in combination with the EL-84 harmonic texturing is the best thing since sliced pie, imo.

The biggest surprise for me was finding out how great humbuckers sound with it.

I wish they made a Blues Jr. III 212 combo. Possibly with 30 watts too.

Why don't you just buy a Vox AC30 in that case?

yeah the little 59 humbucker sounds good, going to change the neck pup that has the alnico III for something else. The super sonic has a nice break up with this guitar but that died:(

I'm just not sure about that. I mean, I have the 30 watt EL84 equipped Peavey Delta Blues but it doesn't sound like the Blues Jr. III. Only played out of an AC30 once in my life and I don't recall it sounding much like the Blues Jr. III either.

To me, the BJIII sounds like a bright Fender amp, that gets some british vibe when overdriven, but still nonetheless a Fendery sounding amp.

Put a Electro harmonix in the farthest tube on the left when looking at the back. gave it a bit more gain and smoothed it out more.

I'm actually considering putting a 12AT7 in the phase inverter slot for more clean headroom.

Also thinking about putting a 12AY7 in the tone and gain stage slot for an overall cleaner sound.

Anyone else ever tried this with any type of Blues Jr for that matter?

Mind you, as previously mentioned, I like the tubes in it now but I just want to experiment with it a bit.

dougs tubes like these:

The TAD EL84-STR's or the Sovtek EL84M's depending on the cleans you're looking for, and for the 3 x 12AX7's, a Tung-Sol in V1, Ruby AC7 HG in V2 and a JJ ECC803 in V3.

Two suggestions, let the speaker break in before you do anything, and don't confuse a fixed biased amp with a cathode biased amp.

Looks like the knob placement for "that sound" hasn't changed that much from the last Blues Jr.

I was also thinking of a 12AT7 for the phase inverter and 12AY7 in the tone and gain stage.
I heard this would allow you to get more distortion from the output tubes (when pushed) as opposed to preamp distortion.
Opinions?
