Has anyone made this modification to their amp or know some who has? Want some feedback on if worth having this done and how well it works.

Be careful modding a HRDlx. It's very easy to lift the traces on the pcb.
The best thing to do is get a decent volume pedal and put it into the effects loop. A lot of people who mod these amps have a ton of problems later on.

I don't problems with the amp at anytime, and not at ease to make any modifications. However, as you mentioned others have used a volume pedal to circumvent this loudness issue and have considered that option. Any other suggestions?

Thanks much,
:D

No, I would just use a volume pedal. Use it in the effects loop.

Thanks, I think that is the way to go. In addition, I have a Boss TU-2 Tuner, and Tube Screamer, should I run the Tube screamer after the volume pedal through the effects loop or keep it after my tuner into the amp?

Thanks

Don't run the Tube Screamer or the tuner through the effects loop. You should only really run the volume pedal or time-based effects like echo, chorus, flanger etc. through the loop.

If you are looking for power (volume) control, a great option is a Weber low power load dump (50 watt model). It probably cost less than a volume pedal. Putting a volume pedal in your effects loop increases preamp gain, not power amp. Sweet overdrive comes more from the power amp tubes. A load dump accomplishes that.

HRDLx amps tend to be reliable, hearty, gig worthy amps. Many folks do the mods on the page you mention with very good results...no problems at all. I was wondering what is is you are looking to change in your HRDLx. ???

I've never had a volume pedal increase preamp gain in the effects loop in any amp I've owned with a loop. I've been playing 40 years and have had more amps than I wish to admit.

I want to modify the master volume control from linear to taper. Setting the master volume on low even at 2, the amp cranks. I don't mind the volume, but want to be able to slowly increment instead of almost full on at low number (hope I explained that correctly). The amp is great for multiple reasons and uses, couldn't ask for better tone and diversity.

Thanks for the input
:D

Yup - It has a great tone. I have played for 40 years and owned (still do) many amps over the years. The effects loop is between the preamp and power amp....therefore it effects the preamp signal before going to the power amp.

Lot's of guys use a load dump (also called attenuator) for exactly what you are wanting to do. You plug your speaker plug into the load dump and the load dump into the speaker input jack. The load dump absorbs some of the power betwen the amp and the speaker...NOT between the preamp and power amp (which is the case of putting a volume pedal in the effects loop) It's the same thing as the trans impedance attenuator built into the Princeton recording amp.

You turn up the knob on the attenuator, which causes the volume to drop while still pushing the the power tubes....then you are able to turn up your volume knobs more. Again, the difference in this approach is that the power tubes are still being pushed. It's like hitting that sweet spot when you're loud and then being able to turn it down without affecting the tone too much. It's sweet and simple.

The thing I love about it is being able to use the amp's volume more easily and ....this is cool.....I set my amp volume, then the overdrive channel volume just a bit more, then use the attenuator knob as a true master allowing me to turn the amp up or down without having to readjust amp settings.

The reason I mention the Weber Load Dump is because it is very reasonably priced way under $100. Some of these things can get fancy and cost up to $300. I hope this helps.

Hey, I've noticed that some people have replaced the transformers with higher grade transformers like Mercury's, but my question is two-fold. I'm thinking of adding a 10" speaker to my HRDlx by way of a new baffle to swap in. Should I buy speakers to match the existing transformer, or should I go ahead and upgrade to something nicer and have compatibility to boot? I'll replace the stock speaker anyway, so I have options. I know better transformers are available, but that's not really the most common mod done to these amps.

I wouldn't change the transformer. Just make sure your speakers' impedance match the transformer.
