Is it possible for a fuse to blow in a tube amp for no apparent reason and then if a new fuse is put in it will be alright again? Or do they blow to indicate something more serious is wrong?

Hi Fossilman,

A fuse never blows for no reason. Rarely will a fuse blow unless something is seriously wrong. Sometimes a power surge or dip will cause a fuse to blow without any other components being damaged. Blowing a fuse in an amp could indicate a problem with the output tubes, among other things. A fuse is for protection, to prevent excess current from flowing in a circuit, so if a fuse blows there is likely a problem. Whenever a fuse blows, you should always check the amp to find the reason before trying a new one, and use the same rating for the replacement as the rating of the one that blew.

I've had them blow, replace them, and all is good with the world. It could be a momentary glitch, a voltage spike, shorted power tube or a million other things. I'd just keep an eye on it. Usually it's some sort of problem though. Doesn't always have to be a major problem depending on your definition of major. Shorted power tubes are a pretty big culprit. Sometimes you just luck out. My 76 Twin blew one once, I replaced the fuse and it went for 25 more years and never blew one again. Go figure. Like Shimm says, be sure to replace it with the same rating fuse.

It's why electricity is often considered to operate on the principle of "FM"......

I put in a correct new fuse and a complete set of spare tubes I had on hand and so far so good. They are well used tubes, but were replaced with a new set just why I forget.
