Hey all, I'm a little confused about the Super Champ XD. I understand that it's a hybrid tube/dsp amp. But what about channel 1? Is it a truly clean tube channel, or is there some dsp amp modeling there as well? Also, does Fender have an email address to contact them about such things? I can't seem to find it on their page. Cheers

Hi mojjett,

The SCXD always has the DSP for the preamp in all selector positions. The 12AX7 tube is just the PI, not a preamp tube, so the whole preamp section is DSP, not tube.

Mine came in this past Monday and it's a fine amp. Very nice sound.

On the other hand, if you love hybrid amps as much as I do that's a good thing.

Thanx for the input. I've heard some good youtube clips of the sound. What are your impressions on the build quality?

I'm certainly no amp guru but it seems very well constructed. At least they didn't use those plastic jacks that Fender was so fond of back a few years ago. #1 on the volume pot basically doesn't exist. I just figure #2 is my starting point. It still plays nicely at low volumes though. I wish they would have included some chrome corner bumpers but that's no big deal. I've had the amp for about 8 months now and have had no performance issues at all.

Sorry I am late in getting back to you. The build quality is very good. Mine came with a bad 6V6 tube and the store replaced both of them with better tubes while I waited for Fender to send him ones to replace mine (he says best to get them in pairs).

I've been quite pleased with this amp.

Hi again y'all. What do you make of this comment that I found on youtube??
If true, what's the significance? My apologies in advance for the dumb question, I don't claim to be all that tech savvy. :) I guess we're still talking dsp preamp ch1, correct?
In spite of having my fill of dsp stuff, I'm finding this amp intriguing. It seems to be the most favored among the VMs :)

@PF1964 ABOUT THE PREAMP TUBE. I found out the details to a qustion asked a while back on this thread, at Bilm's amp site The 12ax7 in this amp DOES function partly as a preamp tube. One side of the the duial triode tube is the Phase Inverter, a "short" fender concertina style PI. The other triode is a regular Fender gain stage (with 100 meg residtors and 22uf cap etc.,) which the digital preamp "cascades" into. This give the SS preamp a much more tube-y ,organic sound. very nice.

You are correct, good eye! I didn't spot it when I glanced at the schematic before, but only half of the 12AX7 is a pi, and half is a gain stage/driver. I disagree about the "This give the SS preamp a much more tube-y ,organic sound", I am sure that the difference is slight at best.

Thanks shimmilou, but it's not my eye that's good :). The quote was taken from youtube which was taken somewhere off the Billm sight. I looked for it there directly, but couldn't find it. I guess the reason this nags me, is because I wonder why they made a separate ch1 if it's not foot switchable, & it's not true clean channel w/o dsp. But I guess it could be like asking why they put fins on the '57 chev. :) cheers

Shimmy, this is an interesting thread. The use of that 12AX7 is a bit odd. I think that Fender split the function, so it could more easily use global feedback onto the first half. Instead of using solid-state global control. But in doing so, sacrificed full voltage swing of a long-tail or full concertina phase inverter.

If they added one more 12AX7 into the gain stage & used both halves of one 12AX7 for PI work, they get a lot more voltage swing and headroom. And "tubey-ness." It would seem to me. It's the old Deluxe Reverb versus Princeton argument all over again.

Just looking at the manual. Now I see there's a jack for a foot switch.
