As a matter of interest, has anybody seen (or even used) the new retro fit gadget from Orange? It's called the Orange Tubesync DIVO OV4. (Dynamic Intelligent Valve Optimisation) Been reading up on it, and it would seem to be the perfect device for guys who are concerned about the correct biasing of their amp valves and the correct replacement tube selection.

Think of it as an engine management system for tube amps. It is made up of 4 octal bases that fit into the existing power tube sockets. You can then plug any power tube you like into the new bases - EL34, 6v6, whatever, they can also be a combination of any of these. The bases are connected by wire to the processing unit. This unit constantly monitors and micro adjusts the output from each indidvidual valve. "When no audio is present, it will reduce bias current to a lower setting to reduce valve wear and tear, instantly returning to its higher level when audio is detected. In the event of a valve fault, a processing algorithm shuts off the affected pair automatically and remembers which valves are at fault, displaying them on warning LEDs" to quote..

You also have the option of defining pre-selected bias states - optimal, hot etc. It also allows for half power setings, like an attentuator. You can even hook the thing upto a PC (again just like a car engine fuel injection system) for further tweaking.

Importantly this device seems to be extremely affordable and retro-fittable to amps with the room to incorporate the higher depth of the valves as they sit in the new bases. No good on the BJ for instance, as the valve room is extremely limited. (You can also buy a 2 valve DIVO system for amps with that configuration).

There are of course claims of audio improvements - "Sonically the OV4 tightens up the midrange focus and attack while also reducing mains hum" to quote.

The device is fitted as standard to the Orange Rockerverb 100.

See the Orange website for details http://www.orangeamps.com. Technical info quoted from Guitatrist Magazine, April 2011, and a full copy of the test review is available on the Orange site

In the UK, they're quoting a price of £299.00. Here is the full review by Nick Guppy from this month's Guitarist magazine:
