Well, I haven't got it yet. The seller says he's had it from new for around 6 months. Are there any differences within the reissue range?

Could very well be. Best to check your tranny's numbers printed on it.

Well, I must say I'm impressed! Apart from excessive hiss (live on another thread) I really like the amp! I love the way it breaks up when you dig in.

It's a '59 Reissue Ltd, less than a year old and immaculate. It comes with the 5AR4 recitifier and, at the moment, I can't see anything written on the transformer. Thing is, I'm a bass-player (!!) who dabbles with guitar every now and again and I'm happy with the the sound so don't see any need to swap out the rectifier. That said, they're not expensive and I'd probably try it out at some point and get the biasing done. But for now, I'm happy. Just need some reverb and delay, now!

I'm suprised you feel the need to add reverb, One of the great things about that big pine cab and four tens is its ability to give that room filling sound, that is what reverb is supposed to recreate in less dimentional sounding amps.

I just miss it, after using it on the Junior. Maybe I'll take your advice and run with it for a while. But I'd love a little bit of delay.

I almost prefer my 5F6A clone without using my Boss FRV-1 reverb pedal. The amp alone is very quiet while the pedal seems to have a fair amount of hiss (simulating the standalone Fender reverb unit maybe?). The 5F6A seems to react differently to the pedal hiss compared to my BDRI.

One of my many (at this moment) amp set ups is a VHT Special 6 Head with two home made 1x12 pine cabs, sitting right next to my DRRI, its amazing the amount of "Reverb" I get without any attached.

I have a C-rex in one and a weber alnico in the other.

Break up is very close to a 5E3 the pine boxes add what sounds just like reverb.
Its my favorite toy right now for a sweet early electric blues sound.
Sorry i sold off all the P-90 guitars, i'm bett'n they would sound very cool through this !

So, I FINALLY got a Bugera 5U4 and swapped that for the 5AR. I also swapped out V1 for a 12AY7. Now, I expected the gain to drop with the new 12AY7 but I'm really not noticing that much difference in the sound. I now have to turn the bright channel volume up to around 4 (from just under 3) to get any sort of sound I prefer. Guitar used was Firebird VII with Zhangbucker vintage set. Is it just me or should I be hearing anything else? Should I go back to the 12AX7?

The overall effect of changing gain stage tubes (like V1, the input tube) --- is amp dependent. Some are more sensitive than others. Yours may not be. Leave the 12AY7 in the amp and play it for a good week. Then, decide if you want to go back to the OEM 12AX7. It will not damage the amp to use the 12AY7 (or any of the 12A(_)7 family of tubes or derivatives) in this tube position.

How does the amp sound with the 5U4GB? You should check the plate voltages and rebias the amp whenever changing rectifiers or rectifier types.

Good luck!

Thanks, BMW.

I played the 'bird for about five minutes through the amp straight, then swapped both V1 and the rectifier, expecting to hear a marked difference in the amp breaking up at a lower volume. Instead, I've head to turn the amp up and I've heard no discernible change.

As to biasing, nope, not yet. And that'll be done by a tech, not myself! Given that the 5U4 is a direct swap-out rectifier, I just went ahead with it, expecting to hear a difference. The only thing I heard was a drop in volume, a big drop, given how sensitive the Bassman's volume control's are. If that's all the difference I appear to be hearing, I wonder if I should replace the original valves and replace one by one.

Then again, you're saying the amp should really be rebiased. Or maybe it's my ears!!
