HA! no i'm fine thanks Shimmi - had to go t o work etc!

In the interim i have found an amp tech who lives about 30 miles from me who is going to give the amp a complete service and sort the fault for £70 so i think i'll let him do it, but thanks for giving me the confidence to have a poke about inside an amp for the first time!!!!!

Screen Grid resistors were the culprit!! all sorted now and the amp sounds absolutely stellar!!!

Awesome! The Plate resistors for preamp and pi tubes, and screen grid resistors for the output tubes were the next things we were going to check, glad you have it working now. :)
