Hey guys, I bought a 40 watt LE Lacquered Tweed Hot Rod Deluxe about a year ago and I love the amp but I've had my eye on the Supersonic 112. I going to sell the Hot Rod and I was wondering how much you guys think it's worth.

They only made 250 unit's with the tweed and it's in basically new condition with newer groove tubes. What do you all think?

Hi Fender890Corey,

If you bought it new, even considering that it still has about 4 years left on the warranty, I'd say realistically you might get $600 for it, more if you have the time to wait for the right buyer, less if you want to sell it quickly. I see one on eBay, auction almost over, with a starting bid of $800 and no takers. You might check with the store that you bought the HRDlx from and see how much that they might give you towards a trade on the SS.

I think even $600 is a little high. You're only talking cosmetics and a speaker. HRD amps even the SE's are going dirt cheap since the III series came out. You never know though. I got $475 for my HRDlx with 7 months left on the warranty. Whatever you do, don't trade it in. I was only offered $275 for my HRDlx in mint condition with a fresh set of JJ's. The HRD series are popular till you try to sell them.

+1

Better to sell it via C/L or Ebay at retail-used price (or close to it) than to accept wholesale-used peanuts in trade from a big-box cartel.

BTW, my amp does not have an LE plate on it. I went to sweetwater and found this:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HRDlxLTLTD
This is my amp.

I found this on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-Hot-Rod-Delu ... 500wt_1011

They appear very similar minus the LE plate. I don't see a spot where it looks like mine was taken off. Should I have one? I'll see if I can post some pics of mine.

Perhaps that particular amp wasn't quite as "limited" as the PR hype claimed......?

As Retroverbial pointed out on another thread, LTD is lacquered tweed, and LE is limited edition. The one from Sweetwater is LTD, not LE, and the one on eBay that has the LE badge is not lacquered. Does Sweetwater have the ad wrong, or is there an amp that is both LTD and LE? I would say that the LE would have the badge, no badge = not LE.

I was quite suprised at the low value of the HRDs in the second hand market, even limited runs.

A friend of mine recently sold his HRD White Lightning amp with matching white Fender cab on E Bay. Only 200 made it here in the UK in 2007 when they were released.
His was immaculate in every way.
1 Bid
£551 it went for. About $880 US.
Relly suprised me.

Well, the rep told me that while mine is not a Limited Edition as Sweetwater claims, it was a limited run of 250 units back in 2003 and haven't made any like that since. So it's worth somthing :o

Bottom line is, and please don't take this the wrong way, a different speaker and cosmetics won't make the amp any more reliable. I was pissed when I tried to sell mine too and it wasn't a limited edition. I felt it was worth at least $100-150 more than what I got for it. It was dead mint with a tube upgrade. In the 40 + years I've been playing and a lot of it professionally, reliability means more to me than looks. Speakers are a personal choice. I don't care how cool something looks. It's long term reliability which means performance value. I'm not saying yours is a dog by any means, mine was. I'd be leery of paying a premium for cosmetics. Doesn't matter to me who manufactured the amp. The HRD series lost their value for a reason and cosmetics wasn't it.

These things just dont hold their value. I sold a blues deluxe in mint condition 2 years old for 475. I wasnt gigging with it and it was just taking up space in my closet. Not a bad amp , but not a great one either.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't exactly call the SS 112 a step up in quality. Maybe you would be better off to keep enjoying the HRDlx, you did mention that you loved it.
