Fender - What a bummer to hear that the Cyber Twin has been discontinued. It could have been marketed so much more effectively if you had gone to greater lengths to explain the inner workings (common, it's not hard - just mike the amp and post to Youtube). How can you let such great amp with so many tonal possibilities go to waste? Ok, I'm done whining.

I'd read in several places on-line (so it has to be true) that it was being discontinued. Hopefully just misinformation.

There are NIB Cyber Twin SE's available right now on Ebay.

A year from now they'll still be there.

Why? Because not a whole lot of people like them. I'm surprised they ran as long as they did. Way too many bells and whistles for my taste. Too much to think about.

I knew you'd be here. So if the Cyber Twin and all that technology is so great, why is it gone and the DRRI still here. Tubes are still here because people want them whether you like it or not. Yeah I'm a geezer and I like tubes.

And no, I'm not going to get into a whole big flame war defending what I like and what you don't like. I don't need anything to control my tone for me.

howdy to you too. i wouldn't dream of disappointing you and not show up.

to your question: why? i dunno, but i certainly doubt the self-serving explanation you purport. much, much more likely death through neglect since Ritchie Flieger and Fender parted their ways.

for an "old geezer" you sure argue like a teenager. if you're in control of your tone, how come you can't tone it down?

and so you like tubes. some like cigarettes. i hope you like ice cream and apple pie too. most teens do. (let's see if this doesn't provoke a reaction...)

ciao,
john.

Me either..but I still have my original CT and and still use it. To me it is like having a custom amp shop in my home, except that I didn't have to buy parts and put together a amp.

I used it at live gigs for ten years, just until the amp knob was damaged during load-out at a gig. I sent it to be repaired, but was still having a minor problem with it, so I only record with it, but I do miss having the different tonal colors at my disposal at live shows.

And, I could see Fender discontinuing the CT with the advent of the Mustang amps, especially the Mustang III & IV, which to me share the same DNA as the CT.

If it is indeed "discontinued" ...
I'd say, it would be more the internal politics (like above) at Fender than anything about the actual amp.
And then ... there is the new Mustang amps ... as thouston pointed out. And they are priced much lower than the CT SE ... and in todays economy ... well ... we all know about that ....

Also ... not interested AT ALL in any flame wars. (buy and play what you like)

My original point: I believe Fender could have had done more to publicly explain/promote the internal workings and options of the amp. If they had, perhaps it could have developed a greater following.

It's a great amp with some solid effects and great versatility. If you are willing to put the time in to learn how the amp works you can get a variety of outstanding Fender clean tones and some very good vintage rock tones (still haven't nailed hard rock tones, but I don't have the guitar or pickups to back that tone up either).

Everybody has the right to play what they like, and this is the am I like.

Frank

All, well said.

Quick update: I have the Mustang IV and the SE. I have been comparing both, the SE is still much more versatile, and to me (maybe because I'm used to it), sounds better - I get the tones exactly the way I want them, especially that CA surf tone. The Mustang IV seems to have a bit too much filtering, similar to a tweed Bassman. But for the money, I don't think you can beat a Mustang. If you're a pro, I think you might go for a SE.

Fender senior mgmt: wake up.
Despite the recent history, you (Fender) have ushered in a revolution: the Cyber Twins, and you've done NOTHING with them since Bill Schultz passed on. Shame. I suppose asking current mgmt to live up to this legacy might be too tough. Should consider a mgmt shake-up and bring in someone reflecting Bill's VALUES and VISION. BTW, I'll bet the books look good - easy to do standing on the shoulder of a giant. Wonder if that'll be the case in 10 years when your legacy is reflected in the books (and I do see some cracks). Been around, I know how it goes.

Ciao,
John.

First, I don't pretend to know any internal working at Fender, but I feel that Fender and Shane Nicholas put in a lot of work in promoting the CT. I had quite a few conversations with Shane when the CT was released. I was at NAMM that year and was one of the first outsiders to play one.

It was the 'guitarist' who 'killed' the vision IMHO.

Me & Shane

I know that Fender listened to guitarists, who brought the original CT, and added their suggestions to the CT-SE, but again, maybe the sales number weren't high enough, and maybe the CT does live on, as I posted, within the Mustang series.

Wow, 2009 & 2010 were crazy, my wife of 20yrs left me (YAH!), my mother died (boo hoo), my bass player is in stage 4 cancer, I developed tendinitis in the ring & pinkie of my fretting hand..... but I have a new girlfriend, we have beautiful home, and I have my own recording/practice room :)
