At today's guitar show in Tempe, AZ the amp team at FMIC premiered and previewed this new addition to the Super-Sonic line. Much of the architecture is carried over from the existing S/S platforms, but with some new (and welcome) twists. A new "notch filter" control is added to the front panel that alters the amp's basic pre-amp voicing in much the same way that the rocker switches on the old Ampeg VT22, V4, V6, and B25 did. The output stage features a quartet of 6L6GC with (drumroll please......) a self-biasing circuit that makes swapping tubes a snap. The cab is a typical twin-twelve arrangement, with Eminence Lightning Bolt ceramics. Cosmetics shown on the prototype were traditional blackface, with ivory "cupcake" knobs and flat amp logo. Though Shawn (one of Fender's product engineers) did not say as much, I'd assume that blonde/oxblood appointments would be available as well. This amp will be formally announced on Tuesday but I received permission from the Fender staff to issue a heads-up to all interested tone junkies.

Hello "Arjay,"

It was nice to meet you. I am glad you enjoyed yourself at the show.

A couple of comments about the Super-Sonic Twin:

-The speakers are Celestion Vintage 30s
-The NOTCH TUNE function lets you tweak the midrange notch with a pot, for great versatility in the BURN channel. I do see what you mean about the Ampeg switches; I used to own a V2 head. This is much more fun (!)
-We are also introducing a head, called the Super-Sonic 100. The head includes the long-spring, tube driven Accutronics reverb, same as the combo. We've got new 412 cabs to match it.

-As you suggested, all these products will be offered in Blonde/Oxblood as well.

The specs will be posted on Fender.com approximately April 1.

Thanks for posting!

Shane

V30's, even better!

The half-stack configuration ought to really honk!

Cool pic, Tony!

Is that a VVRI in the band pic featured on your web site?

Rawk on!

Yep, sure is! My Cyber-Twin was slightly damaged in loading after a gig one night, the Data/Value wheel was smashed in, and the presets were changing at random times. I got it fixed, but didn't trust it for gigs.

My friend was selling his VVRI. I was using my original tweed 4x10 Blues Deville, but was way too loud for most venues, and heavy as heck, so I got VVRI. I do use a BOSS ME-20 http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=894&ParentId=46 with it.

But, after hearing about the new SST, I may want to take it for a test drive.

I bought a new Super Sonic Twin (100 watt combo) and got to gig with it Friday and Saturday. I also have their Super Sonic 60 combo, and was gigging with it right up until the past weekend. I like them both for the variety of music I play. I also gig regularly with Marshalls and Mesa Boogies. I have a lot of amps and mix it up every few months.

For me, the Super Sonic 60 was quicker to dial in the burn channel, I had it dialed in in the first few songs. With the SS Twin I was half way through the first night before I could say I liked the sound. I had to run it in "club" mode to keep the volume down (not!...) and keep the notch tune in the middle (and leave it there) to allow myself to let the tone "make the tone" I was after. If repositied it, I had to follow it up with tone knob changes. I think eventually I'll get the notch tune figured out but as it was, I had to leave it in the middle and ignore it to get peace.

When I got the amp out of the box and set it up at home, I had no troubles in the arena mode getting my tone with gain one "10" gain two "7" and the volume about 1.5-2 on the burn channel, speaker damping on "normal" and bias "normal'. As soon as I turned on and ran through the sound check I had to run the volume knob and the first crack of sound (like about .8!), so I switched it to "club" mode to allow at least a solid "1" on the potentiometer. I am considering using the effects loop to cut volume (and leave it on) if I gig with it in a small club again.

By the time I packed up Saturday night I was happy to have it BUT the first few hours were like setting up the Boogies in my view. As simple as the burn channels appears, It took more effort than I expected to dial it in.

peace

It's a pretty sophisticated design and a lot of the features interact with one another (sometimes unintentionally). Thus, it may take time to find the real "sweet spots" that fit a particular owner's playing style. Glad it's working out for you -- got any pics?

Rawk on!

Thank you, I soon realized that they Played together, so I had to leave it alone!

I have a iphone pic from the gig. I have a custom made matching cabinet (both blonde) and though I set up on it I did not use the extra set of VC30's as I did NOT need addition db!
Also I was NOT SURE what ohm setting to use. The SS twin is set up at 8ohm out of the box but I see the two eight ohm speakers are parallel. My cabinet is two 16 ohm VC30's for eight ohm load. What should I switch it to if I use the cabinet?
Can I can email you the pic and you post it here for me? I do not have a photobucket etc account. (send me a PM please)

Thank you Arjay for making me feel welcome. I appreciate your help this morning with my questions and posting this up for me.
I have a new mic coming (I bought a Sennheiser e906) and hope to have it by next weekend. I am finally retiring the Sure 57. I will post up my opinion of it if there's a section for it.
The Stratocaster Deluxe has Kinman "woodstocks" and my coat on the floor in the back ground is a Columbia Titanium. haha, oh and those reading glasses are 2.0! I was not kidding you when I said I snapped a quick cell phone picture as I went back up on "stage"!
peace
