im looking at tubes on TubeDepot (obviously....), and in this instance, i'm looking for a tube to be used in the phase inverter. some people talk about "matching", other people talk about "balancing the triodes". (i know some people dont believe any of this makes a difference for a PI tube regarding tone and feel and amp output characteristics, but lets just say it does).

TubeDepot offers both services (matching and balancing), in fact they even offer to do both on the same tube (for the price of both services of course).

what the heck is the difference between having matched and balanced triodes? is it worth doing both on the same tube?

A single preamp tube consists of two triodes, each triode is one half of the tube, or one side of the tube. You may notice on schematics that the two halves will be designated V1A and V1B indicating the two triodes in the V1 tube. Balanced means that both halves of the same tube are the same as far as their response/tone shaping/gain. If one half of the tube is used for clean channel, and the other half is used for drive, it may not be necessary to have a balanced tube. In the PI position, some people feel that a balanced tube is a must.

Matched is referring to two or more tubes that have the same response as each other, usually associated with output tubes being a matched pair or quad. So if you only get one preamp tube, you may want it balanced, but there is no other tube to match it to, so paying for matching is useless. If you get two or more preamp tubes, you may want them matched to each other for the same response in any position that they are installed in, and having a matched spare insures the same tone and response in the amp if a tube needs to be replaced. :)

i found explanation on tubedepot's site:

Matching (+$2.00) – If you want matched pairs of preamp tubes, choose this option. You must buy at least 2 preamp tubes for us to match preamps tubes. We match to within 3%. There is a $2 per tube fee for this test.

Balanced Triodes (+$2.00) – If you want the best performance for the Phase Inverter section of your amplifier, you can choose this option. There is a $2 per tube fee for this test.

Matched+Balanced Triodes (+$4.00) – We can match and balance preamps tubes for you as well. You must buy at least 2 preamp tubes for us to match and balance preamps tubes. There is a $4 per tube fee for this test.

makes sense now. thanks all

 They look similar to me, here is an extra $2 apiece, thanks! I want my tubes to have the labels all facing the same way, and I would pay extra for that. AAMOF, the new GT preamp tubes labels all face the same way.........
