That setup is beautiful Arjay. I feel like my next post will be like coming onstage after SRV

Yeah, the fellow who built and owns it now prefers it over his SRRI and a Marshall combo (type unknown but possibly a JTM 45).

You can do all kinds of crazy things with and to a Fender. Just plan accordingly and they usually turn out great.

Thanks guys.

Rebelsoul, I used a brand called Feast-Watson, I'm not sure if it's available in the US but it's just normal Amber Shellac flakes, you should be able to find the same at a hardware store I'd guess. You mix the dried flakes into pure Methylated Spirits (250grams of flakes to 1 Litre Metho) and when it dissolves I strain it through an old stocking into a glass jar. In a sealed jar it will keep for a while, the stuff I used on this amp is left over from the previous amp I built in December.

The colour is a nice aged Amber tint. On your Tweed guitar cases if you are having problems with the Shellac being too dark it might be best to lay a couple of sealer coats of "Clear" Shellac to seal the Tweed first to help stop it absorbing the following Amber tinted coats, the Zinsser Bullseye Clear Spray Shellac is good for that (see pic). It gets harder to control the final colour with a paintbrush, especially if you add extra coats to try evening out blotchiness from hand brushing (that's the beauty of spray application) but I've seen some great results.

I hope that helps a bit, here's the Flake Shellac I use and I didn't use the Spray Bomb clear on this amp but it might help with your guitar cases as base coat sealer.

Hey Snowy, have you ever given any thought to an external-mix airbrush? I use a Paasche to minimize "re-loading" time.

G'day Arjay, yeah you're right, the airbrush I'm using is not ideal (It's just that it has the largest needle/nozzle size I have on hand to get some decent coverage), it would be much better to use an external-mix with an attached jar. It does get a bit tedious with the cup needing a refill after 1 pass on each panel.

Actually if Zinsser offered an Amber coloured Shellac in a spray pack a couple of those would be perfect for someone wanting to just do one amp, but I've only seen the Spray pack Shellac in Clear, not Amber. Actually I'd bet in the US there's an Amber tinted Shellac product available in the spray packs that we don't have here in Oz.

Indeed, I believe Re-Ranch offers some tinted lacquers in rattle-cans.

Mebbe you could borrow an automotive-type gun for shooting cabs. You certainly have the compressor for it.

Thanks so much Snowy.
yeah I have brushed the shellac onto the cases, and have seen that the tweed absorbs more and if you overlap the brush strokes you get a dark line.....they do look "vintage" though. :)
next time I'll use your advice....I'm going to look for the Zinsser amber in a spray.

I just had to join so I can watch the new build and give a little feed back! Looking great so far. I would definitely recommend the TubeDepot build as a first time amp build. I've built one myself as well and it sounds great.

Are you using a Texas Heat in this one as well? What kind of resistors are you using for this build? Also, once you get finished, I would love to hear a comparison video. The stock TubeDepot build vs. the upgraded cap build.

Have you played around with different tubes in your previous TD build? I've tried a few different types and found I like two EH 12AY7's in the V1 and V2 position and two JJ 6V6GCs for the power tubes. By using two 12AY7's, you mostly get power tube distortion, which just sounds fantastic! But, you have to really crank the amps which isn't so great for playing in your room. 18 watts doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it gets loud. I doubt I would ever used two 6L6's with a solid state rect. for a total of 20 watts. It has plenty of headroom with the 18.

I look forward to see this build completed! Have fun and be safe.

Sorry it's been a while since my last update, I hope to get this build finished in the next few days so the updates will be coming thick and fast from here on.

Hey Matt, yes I'll be putting in another Texas Heat, I love that speaker. The resisters are Carbon Film throughout the build.

I finished preparing the chassis, drilling holes and test fitting the Circuit Board. I like to get all the drilling and test-fitting of the board done before I get the board loaded with components. Here's the pics:

Getting ready to drill holes for mounting the Circuit Board.

The Chromework on this chassis is really beautiful

Here's the standoffs ready to test-mount the board.

The board test-fitted OK

Drilled out the V1 socket mounts and fitted shock-mount grommets, these help prevent microphonics.

Next up will be fitting/wiring up the speaker.

Welcome Mr. Speaker, your new mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make the world a little louder.

And here is where you'll be working, your new office.....

Next step in the build will be populating the circuit board with the various components.

Thanks guys, I love doing these "build diary" type threads and it's great to have you guys offering encouragement and comments!

All the resistors have been fitted now all the capacitors are going onto the board. One little thing I like to do is just use a little piece of Blue-tack to help temporarily hold the caps where I want them while I turn the board upside down for soldering.
Image

Before soldering, (or course I remove the Blu-Tack once soldered  ) Those Orange Drops sure are Fat Bastards though!
