Good Lord, what are they using -- titanium/lead alloy packing crates?!?!?

It only cost $45 in S&H when I bought a '66 Bandmaster head from an Ebayer in Alberta.

WTFO?

Yup. My reaction exactly. I'll hold off on ordering until I feel like taking a drive South of the border. There's a parcel broker just on the other side but I have to drive an hour each way.

A sensible alternative, PTM.

Somebody in the Royal Postal Service is getting mighty damn rich!

I don't think Snowy paid half that much to have his kit shipped to Australia.

Sorry to hear that PTM, it might be worth calling Brian and asking him to recheck the shipping quote to Canada, maybe they just look up a generic chart for "International" and in reality they might be able to work something more cost-effective. It sounds like a lot to get it to Canada.

I had mine shipped minus the speaker and it was about $220, but swallowed it because:

1. I'm in Australia - they had to get it across the Pacific.
2. Our Aussie Dollar is stronger against the Greenback than it's been in years. If I was going to do it now was the time.
3. To get similar quality and tone in a hand-built "store bought" amp here in Oz would still cost an additional $2500!

Here's a '57 Deluxe in one of my local stores 15 minutes from me, look at the price!!

I'm totally bummed and feel bad for you that you had to cancel though, when I read your first post I got quite excited for you that you would be building as comparing notes would be great.

Give Brian a call he might be able to work something out.

Yeah, no - the confirmation email specifically said "to Canada". I called and they said that it fell under the shipping surcharge, etc. Nope, when I re-order it will be to the parcel place in the US. I'll just have to pick it up so I'll wait until I order some other stuff so that I can combine the pick up trip with some other packages.

That sounds like a good plan PTM.

One thing I'd like to recommend when you order is to have them swap one of the 12AX7 tubes for a 12AY7 so you can use it in V1. To me the amp sounds much nicer with the 12AY7 in V1, that was also the tube used in that position in the original Tweed Deluxes.

With regard to the MOD speaker, the amp sounds great with that speaker in it, there's no question about it, I could have lived with that speaker in the amp no problem, based on the sound. BUT... in saying that there are a whole bunch of speakers that will sound great in this amp, some will sound better to different people, they can bring out all the different flavours the amp has to offer.

To my ears the Texas Heat was a great match with a really smooth and fat OD, very sensitive to pick dynamics, and a bass handling capability that can keep things sounding solid right up to 12, and this amp while relatively small can dish out some serious bass, so it compliments all those things that this amp delivers. I also liked that it was Made in Kentucky.

Wiring up the Volume and Tone controls calls for soldering a common ground buss wire across the back of the pots.

This can be a real challenge because pots act like a heat-sink leaving you with a bad, messy joint if you don't follow a few simple tricks for soldering on the back of pots, I'd like to share how I've learn't to do it and I've found using the following steps things will go a lot better and the results won't look like a total mess. I use these steps to prepare a bed of solder on the pot BEFORE trying to solder anything to it.

1. As a rule pots have a kind of protecing film on the back that doesn't take solder very well, get some 400 grit wet/dry and give them a good scuff up to get to the bare metal.

2. Dampen a cloth with some IPA (Alcohol) and wipe the back of each pot, this will help clean and degrease it.

3. I like to use a "Flux Pen" to dab some flux on the area where the solder will be.

4. Make sure the tip of your soldering iron is clean and tinned or it won't transfer heat well. Then build up a pretty large blob of solder, larger then you think normal, this large blob provides more mass to help carry more heat onto the back of the pot. When I have a good sized blob just put it down on the pot where you applied the flux. As the pot heats up the blob of solder will just spread out a little naturally. That's it, now you can solder something straight into that blob of prepared solder much easier.

Scuffed and cleaned pots, ready to solder

After putting a blob of solder described above, I just reheated each blob and laid the buss wire into the blob and held it the for a couple of seconds and it's done.

Again, I'm not saying this is the best or only way to do it but it works for me, hopefully it can help somebody else as well.

Snowy :)

My biggest problem is soldering something to a chassis...not a common job,but just every once in awhile.

Buy a belt holster for it then write a song.

The hook will of course be "Big Iron On His Hip".

That is the Arnold Schwarzenegger Signature Series Soldering Iron.

Hi Rebelsoul, for soldering to the chassis, if you can find a convenient existing bolt, you can use one of these grounding tabs, much easier to solder onto.

I bought a hi-watt Weller iron not long ago but can't remember the rating....about the only time I've soldered to the chassis lately was replacing a filter cap can on my '62 Princeton....it's kind of a sloopy looking job,I hate to have something that looks like I don't know what I'm doing. :)

Dang! With the size of that iron, might as well weld the darn thing onto the chassis. :)

I use a Weller W100P. I just plug it right into the wall outlet. Though some folk use a heat variac.

Looking great, Snow! I just love the quality of pictures you take. What camera?

I bet you can't wait to fire this thing up! I'm curious as to your thoughts on the sound quality between the two builds. I hear orange caps make for a brighter sounding amp. I know mine gets that nice Fender bell tone going in the bright channel.

Can't wait to see more.

Thanks Matt,

Yeah, I'm pretty keen to fire it up. 8)

It will be interesting to hear the difference between this amp and the previous one. The beautiful cleans were something I wasn't exactly expecting from one of these amps, but as you point out they are there, and they have lovely fat bell tone.

The camera I have is a Canon EOS 400D, I think you guys in the US know it as a "Digital Rebel XTi". I've had it for a few years now, it's been great for a casual snapper like me who wants an SLR. I know nothing about cameras or taking pics so if they turn out good the credit goes totally to the camera.

A mate of mine is a professional photographer and he takes truly gorgeous shots, the kind that elevate photographs into art. Check em out.
