Thanks bluesstrattone, I highly encourage you to build one of these amps, as not only will you experience a very deep satisfaction in a finished amp that's a lifetime keeper, you will have an amp with some serious tone.

As a plus, since you built it, and using what you learn from building it, there's a good chance that if something goes wrong in the future you will have a huge headstart in making it right again yourself.

That's definitely a good feeling. 8)

Prettiest thing I've seen all weekend!

There are some major amp manufacturers who could learn a thing or two from your assembly methods.

(actually, they'd be re-learning those lessons)

Hint, hint......

You rawk, Snowy.

Had a Q about using silicone sealer or some such thing between caps. I used to do this. Then, this tech told me don't do it. As it changes the tone of the amp (I think he was talking "sparkle" or sustain). He said just properly angle the caps away from each other to avoid contact. And to be able to get to parts underneath.

Ok... I didn't really believe him. But, I've heard the same thing from some guitarists and hi-fi techs. So, I don't use that technique anymore. What's your take on the whole matter? A little OCD, isn't it?

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.

Real nice looking amp there BMW! 8)

Just a note on the hot glue under or between the caps,

I'm not aware of it changing the tone for the worse (ie, less sustain or sparkle), I guess it's certainly possible, but with this hot melt between the caps it can be easily and gently pryed off to remove it, if I feel there is something lacking in tone, that's why I put just a small single drop between the caps. In fact I should do a comparison and try it with/without just to satisfy my curiosity so I can hear any difference.

One thing I don't want to do is lead people astray in doing things they shouldn't, as usual these are just my way of doing things, definitely not the only, or even correct way.

I would be careful using normal "Silicone" though as it usually contains solvents like Acetic Acid (that's the Vinegar smell) and in time it can corrode/attack copper traces etc. If using Silicone you should use the "Neutral Cure RTV" type.

Here's the pots, tube sockets, speaker jacks etc, fitted to the chassis ready for wiring up.

Next up, the input sockets, and the board goes into it's new home and the wiring job begins.

Getting the Input jacks oriented nicely with the resistor soldered to both can be a pain in the butt, if trying to do it after they have been fixed to the inside of the chassis. A good way to tackle it is to use the chassis holes as a "jig" for correctly spacing and orienting the jacks and soldering the resistor in place to both jacks in this easy to get at position. Then move the soldered twin jack "assembly" to their correct location the inside of the chassis.

Outside temporarily in "jig" position the jack are easy to work on and get oriented correctly for soldering.

Each assembly then transferred to the correct location.

Wow! This is great considering I literally ordered my 5e3 Tube Depot kit about an hour ago!

Some people have commented to me that I'd be better off just buying a used Deluxe clone for almost the same price, but that's missing the point. I want to build the kit for the reasons you mentioned Snowy - the pride and satisfaction of doing it yourself.

I'm just going to build mine with the stock components. Any thoughts on that Jensen MOD speaker that the kit comes with?

+1 You learn tons doing it yourself. Also gives you bragging rights.
I build a lot of BYOC pedal kits and never paint them or mark what they controls do. Keeps all my cohorts guessing.

Well, scratch that. I placed my order and within a few hours received an email stating that they were a) out of stock and b) would cost $200 to ship to Canada. I have asked them to cancel the order as that shipping fee is outrageous.

Good Lord, what are they using -- titanium/lead alloy packing crates?!?!?

It only cost $45 in S&H when I bought a '66 Bandmaster head from an Ebayer in Alberta.

WTFO?
