Hi,

I am trying to record directly from the Pre Amp Out jack on my HRD mkIII into a USB audio interface. I have found that as soon as I connect the USB audio interface I get a lot of noise (buzz) from the amp.

I have tried 2 different different audio interfaces and have also tried connecting my computer to the same power socket as my amp but it makes no difference. I was able to do this with a previous revision of the HRD and I didn't have any noise problems. The manual says that the Pre Amp Out can be used for recording.

Is this a known problem with the HRD mkIII? Is there anything I can do to get rid of the noise?

thanks, Iain.

Hi iainpople,

Sounds like you might have a ground loop somewhere. Since the noise is coming from your amp only with the interface connected, I would suspect the interface or computer connections are causing a ground loop and causing the noise. Computers near the guitar are notorious for causing noise anyway, so it may just be the proximity of the computer that is causing the problem. Are you using an instrument cable for the preamp out to interface connection? Maybe a shielded instrument cable from preamp out to interface would help.

I would start by getting the computer as far away from amp and guitar as possible and see if that makes any difference. Try connecting the components one at a time to see if you can determine the source of the noise. Example, with the power off to the interface and interface disconnected from the computer and computer off, plug the amp into the interface check for noise. Then turn on the interface and check for noise, then connect computer and check for noise, then turn on computer and check for noise.

Thanks for your reply. It turns out that it was an external monitor plugged into my laptop that was causing the noise. I moved the power lead for the monitor into the same electrical socket as my amp and the noise has gone away. So looks like it definitely was a ground loop issue.

Glad it isn't a problem with my amp!

That's great! Yes, the CRT is what I had in mind when I said computer, they can cause some noise. 8)

Good to know that it wasn't the connections. But I still like Mic'ing the amp.
